"If you were me you'd know...but you're not, so don't think you do." A lot of good things had been occurring in Bael's life recently. The young demonkeeper had finally been able to manifest his familiars after what had seemed like a lifetime. He had been awfully lonely without the three demons at his side. They had been with him since he was but a small boy and their absence had left a noticeable hole in his heart. The second thing was now that Alistair, Nova, and Realm were back, he could question them about his father since Salem had been no help aside from dropping a name. Bael had learned quite a bit.
For starters, Amon Vine Strider was indeed his father. He was a Daeva with a legion of demons under his command. That had given Bael mixed feelings. With that small bit of information, he now knew why Salem had kept calling him a Half-Spawn. In all his years of living, which was only ten, he'd never assumed himself to be a half demon. Especially since his best friend Hyze had told him only the pure of heart could see her true form, which was a unicorn. On top of all of that, it made him wonder what his true nature really was. His familiars were demons and they were good, but Bael thought of himself as a person. Would he grow up to be one of the rotten eggs? On the other hand, to know that his father was in charge of so many demons instilled a sense of pride in the boy. There was much more to be told than just that.
According to Nova, he had three older brothers. All of whom were full demons that resided in Hell. Asura who was three years older, Gimby who was thirty-three years older, and Valac who was fifty years older. Bael had inquired as to why he had three brothers and a father who'd never come looking for him. Nova, along with his other two familiars had refused to answer. He'd tried to order them to tell, but yet they had continued to deny him the information that sought an answer to. That alone had put a damper on Bael's mood, but he tried to keep some hopes with knowing that he had a family out there. He just had to find a way to get to them.
That brought him to his third most exciting bit of information. His level had been dropped! He was now a Level 2. Bael had been quite pleased when he'd been informed. A level drop meant he was one step closer to getting out of Manson. He would have been worried a few months back if he'd been told as much. Bael wouldn't have had a clue what he'd do once he was released, but now he knew there were people out there.
So here he was, laying out on the lawns in the shade of a tree with a big smile on his face. The child had been outside like this for quite some time. It was so rare for him to be in such high spirits. He couldn't help but relish every moment of it. Things were looking brighter and brighter. He had also found out that while he had been the product of a demon and a human, he retained no demon traits. His gift had been a sort of replacement for that and his four familiars had been given to him by his father as a means to protect him, care for him, ensure he was never lonely, and above all to keep him safe. One day he'd have to tame his own demon if he wanted to truly call himself a demonkeeper. That was a bit intimidating, but he didn't put too much thought into it.
What more was that the name Bael had been his father's doing. It had warmed the child to no ends to know that. He'd been waiting so long for any sort of information, and now he had it. Bael's smile widened.
"I'm not alone anymore," he whispered, his brown eyes sparkling with joy.
"I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim."

Cora had been really good. Since her talk with Julius, she had kept to focusing on building strength in her wings rather than trying to fly again. When she did try to use them for gliding, Dutch was around to catch her, even if they were sticking to the gym and crash mats just in case. She hadn’t told her aunt that she’d fallen, just that she wanted to use her flight classes to track the progress of exercises and do it indoors. Since it also allowed for better ways to practice ducking and jumping when her aunt was swinging a stick at her, it worked out well. Especially since she had a newfound understanding why her aunt wanted her to be able to defend herself. Working on reflexes seemed like a good place to start at least.
Today she had taken to running around the grounds with her wings out. She had been told just having them out while doing things like running would also help them develop as the air resistance would be good for her. So she’d been just been running and finding that the air felt good on her feathers so it was good to run until she was tired of it. Which was how she wound up running straight past the boy on the lawns before she stopped and walked back towards him.
“Will you play with me?” she asked, shifting her wings away again. She hadn’t really seen all too many people around her age here. It made her want to see if he wanted to play, or do something. It was always more fun to play with people than on her own. “I’m Cora.” She would shift and play with him in her other form if he wanted to, right now she just wanted to try to be friendly first and foremost.

"If you were me you'd know...but you're not, so don't think you do." Bael continued to soak up the rays of the sun. It sure felt nice against his skin, even moreso when he thought about how the cold would soon be setting end as the summer days faded away. He'd hardly noticed the girl running about the lawns, but when a shadow was cast over his face he looked in the direction it at had come from. Bael also didn't see many kids his age around, except for Hyze, Luna and Moon, and there'd been that one boy that occasionally popped up in his Life Skills to see the teacher, but he'd stopped showing up earlier in the year. This girl before him he'd seen once or twice around the campus, but she was usually accompanied by an adult that Bael assumed to be either an older sister or mother. He couldn't quite tell. It was probably the reason he'd never approached her to begin with.
Bael sat up as she asked him to play with her. "Absolutely." Manson was kind of hit and miss when it came to people being nice, so he wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to make friends. He stood up, dusting loose strands of grass and dirt from his pants. "I'm Bael. Nice to meet you Cora." He held out his hand to her. "What would you like to play," he asked. The young boy hadn't had many opportunities to just wild out and be a kid, but now that he was feeling easier at Manson and with the new information that was provided, he could do just that. He kind of deserved it, even if he wasn't aware of it himself.
"Are you new here?"
"I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim."

Cora had spent most of her time since she’d arrived getting settled. She’d had to bond with her aunt, as she didn’t want to live here with family that was just a stranger. It seemed more important to get to know her a little while also getting settled into a new routine with classes and learning how not to start fires. Sure, she’d made a few friends, she just hadn’t tried to make friends with kids her own age as that hadn’t seemed helpful as far as getting to know her aunt went. Now, however, she felt like they weren’t strangers anymore and she’d even gotten hugs from the dragon so she felt like it was safe to focus on being a kid and making friends closer to herself in age. Especially since she had time and it was more fun playing with someone else.
It was exciting that he wanted to play with her. She was happy to shake his hand. “Nice to meet you too,” she said, meaning it too. “Whatever, really. I’ve mostly been playing by myself, so anything you want to do. It has to beat chasing sticks I threw myself or working on my wings. Though I do do a mean game of fetch.” She wasn’t ashamed of that really. She was good at fetching things. She was just happy to have both time and an opportunity to spend time with someone closer to her in age outside of class. She hadn’t really done that since before everything changed.
“I’ve been here a few months. I had to make sure I wouldn’t accidentally start another fire and get to know my aunt a little better. I mean, the first time I ever met her was when she brought me here. She’s a little overprotective, but getting to know her and bonding a little has made her ease up, so it seems like a good time to make some friends.” Wow, so that turned out a lot longer reply to a question than she had expected. Excitement did tend to make her ramble though. “How about you?” It seemed polite to return the question, even if he seemed a lot more at ease here than she did so far.

"If you were me you'd know...but you're not, so don't think you do." Bael listened attentively to what Cora had to say. He was going to take a wild guess and say she was some kind of canine shifter or something close since she'd apparently been playing fetch by herself. That was a bit strange, but he decided it was best not to point that out. It might come off as rude. Bael had been lucky to have familiars so he didn't have to play alone. What he knew for a fact was that they weren't going to be playing fetch. Bael wouldn't be able to grasp his mind around his new found playmate running after a stick and bringing it back to him. It also ruled out any game of catch. He had a tennis ball in his backpack that he'd thrown back and forth with one of the teachers on their lunch break earlier this week.
"Well, there's hide and seek, tag, bowling, but I'd have to go talk to the canteen staff about giving us empty bottles first, or we can go to the playground and play there. Sometimes I do an obstacle course for fun," he added. "I also have cards in my bag." Bael never went anywhere without his bookbag. It had most of his belongings in it and a lot of things to keep him entertained when he didn't want to bother his familiars. "There's plenty to do, we just have to figure out what we want to do." Bael picked up his bag off the ground and secured it to his back and shoulders.
The younger male was a bit jealous that Cora had family that she could see every day. "That's cool," he said after a moment. He didn't inquire about her parents because it might be something unpleasant to talk about. "Glad you and your aunt are getting along." He wondered if he had aunts and uncles. His mother was an only child, he didn't know if his father was. "Next February I'll have been here for two whole years," he answered. "I didn't like it at first, but it gets better," he answered honestly, just in case she didn't like Manson just yet.
"I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim."

Maybe it was a little weird that she had been playing fetch with herself when she was bored, but she hadn’t really had a chance to get to know a whole lot of other people. Partly because she hadn’t wanted Dutch to worry too much about who she hung out with, partly because she had been worried herself after that day she had accidentally set herself on fire and not been able to put the fire out again without help. She had needed to learn to trust herself again before it felt safe to interact with others. Since there hadn’t been any further incidents, and she had learned some techniques to calm herself down if it did happen again, she was a little more prepared now than she had been when she first arrived.
“Hide and seek might be a little unfair,” she admitted. “Maybe we can go to the playground? I like climbing, so an obstacle course sounds like fun.” While Cora figured hide and seek would be fun and entertaining, it seemed only fair to let him know that she’d probably have an unfair advantage when it came to seeking. “Cards could be too, but you’d have to teach me. Cards weren’t really a big thing at home.” She knew how to play go fish, that was about it.
Cora was beaming when he said he was glad she was getting along with her aunt. “I’m parts hellhound and parts fury, but only found out last year. I didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time in either form before coming here, so she’s helping me learn how to fly.” Well, right now they were just sticking to the ground, but apparently there were lots of techniques she could learn with her feet firmly planted on the ground.
Bael sounded like he’d been here a lot longer and had all the ins and outs figured out. That was good. “Are you kidding? I love it here!” she exclaimed, before she remembered herself and tried to curb her enthusiasm a little. “I can run around in my hound form, explore all the things I never got to do even after learning what I am... Apparently I’m a little scary in that form, even if I still have my puppy fur, so mom insisted I stick to human form around humans. Which I guess makes sense, but here? I can figure out what I am without having to hide from anyone. And take classes.” It was a little hard not to be enthusiastic about this place now that she felt properly settled in.
“Sorry, I just really like school. Always have. So getting to go to school and be whatever I’m meant to be all at the same time is a little insane.”

"If you were me you'd know...but you're not, so don't think you do." Bael would have felt smothered in Cora's position. The young boy hadn't had much parental guidance and although he'd craved it and still did till this day, he wouldn't have felt comfortable with someone watching his every step like a hawk or a stalker. Sure, he wanted someone that would worry about him and fuse over him when things were inconvenient, but he didn't want to be smothered. Bael was such an independent boy that at this point he just wouldn't feel right with someone like Dutch as his guardian. Even with Salem acting completely irate, Bael wouldn't have thought it necessary.
It was official, shifters were weird. Bael wouldn't exclaim as much aloud though. He didn't want to offend the other student, especially when they seemed to be getting along so far. Be a shame to ruin the start of a friendship when he could have simply held his tongue. "Hide and seek is out then," he agreed without argument. Bael didn't know how to play a lot of card games either, but he'd hung around enough of the older kids in the common rooms to learn a thing or two. "Let's go to the playground, I can teach you cards later." He wanted to play, as in run and jump and get a bit dirty.
He'd started for the dormitory so that they could make their way to the playground. His brown eyes focused on her as she said she was a hellhound. "Is that a demon dog or something? And what's a fury?" Bael wasn't about to blurt out that he was a demonkeeper, because she might lie about a hellhound being a demon and he was curious. The young boy didn't know how to tame demons anyway, so he didn't want to spoil the chance for knowledge. He was gaining a quick interest in learning about all things Hell related. His familiars weren't exactly helpful in that category.
He offered another small smile as she seemed to get excited about being at Manson. It was nice to meet someone that didn't loathe the place. "One of the guards told me that everyone's version of normal is a bit different, which is why we can be ourselves here but have to blend in when we're around people that aren't supernatural or gifted. The adults are pretty helpful when you need help controlling your gifts. I had a familiar that would never listen to me, he still doesn't, but I talked to him for the first time thanks to the adults here. I learned a lot too. And I like school too, so don't say you're sorry." He'd been skeptical at first, even reluctant, but now he was always happy to attend whatever course he was assigned to. "What classes are you taking?" Maybe they had similar class schedules or could say hello in passing.
"I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim."

Maybe if she hadn’t been used to parents that checked in on her and made sure she was safe and comfortable, Cora would’ve felt a little smothered by her aunt. As it was, she was pretty used to the hovering, she’d figured it wast just people wanting to keep her safe and make sure she stayed out of danger. And the more she learned about her family history, the more she understood why. Her mother and aunt seemed like the kind of people that would make all sorts of enemies. Not because they were bad people, but they were both overly stubborn and good at getting people to listen. With their fists if they had to.
“Sounds like a plan,” she said when they were going to the playground instead of playing hide and seek. It hardly seemed fair to him to play hide and seek when trusting her senses was part of what she was working on while she was here. It was all a little strange to her as well, but she was getting used to it.
Cora was happy to follow along to the playground. “Not exactly,” she said, frowning slightly when he asked if it was a demon dog. “More like a dog made to serve demons? My aunt is looking for a way out of it, but if I’m bound to a demon when I’m all grown up, I have to do whatever they want. And drag souls to Hell like my mom does when people make deals with demons.” It was a little scary really, and she desperately hoped she didn’t have to get bound to any mean demons when she was grown up. The thought of that was really scary. “A fury is, according to my aunt, a one woman justice system. Spirits of vengeance or something. I don’t know. I just want to be little old me.” Cora didn’t really know how she felt about either of her supernatural parts just yet, she just knew she wanted to be her own person.
Listening to Bael talk made Cora really happy about going over to talk to him. It was nice to meet someone else who seemed to have had a positive experience here. Sure, it had been a little daunting at first, but she was enjoying most of the people she’d met. “What sorts of familiars do you have?” she asked, wanting to know more about the boy. “All the ones I would be taking in a regular school, the shifter classes, flight, languages, and history classes with my aunt, and the elemental class. Even if one of the counselors and the dragon are better suited at fire than most others around here.” Cora rather liked spending time with Julius, he was nice. And he was nice to her aunt. “I probably like life skills best, it’s peaceful, and the teacher is really nice.”

"If you were me you'd know...but you're not, so don't think you do." Bael really didn't mind. Hide and seek was better with a group anyway. One time he'd asked the Life Skills teacher if they could have a game day on Friday. The man had agreed, saying it would be a good free day for everyone in the class. Bael liked Friday's in Life Skills. They got to pick what they wanted to learn that day. Bael had learned a few things, like how to buy clothes online and food! Mr. Cairo had even explained to him how he could buy things in bulk so he didn't run out as quickly. Bael had been mesmerized because he was a child that worried about running out of food and water. It was probably the only thing he ever worried about.
A dog that served demons? That didn't sound all that fun, or interesting. Bael had imagined it to be something a little cooler. In his head, he though a Hellhound was something big and scary with spiky fur and a mean growl and big teeth. Like Cerberus the Three Headed Dog. "Whatever they want you to do? I wouldn't want to be in your shoes," he told her. He hadn't meant to sound so blunt, but he didn't know how else to put it. Bael opened his mouth to say that if your soul went to hell then you probably deserved it because bad people went to Hell, but then he remembered that his father was a demon and resided in Hell. Bael gave a small sniffle. He didn't think his dad was bad, even if he didn't know the man. The guy had sent him his familiars after all.
Bael couldn't help the look on his face. He had a bias against women. He'd gotten a little better, but not by much. He didn't know what to say so he just shrugged and kept walking. "I have four familiars. They look like a ferret, crow, tiger, and I don't know how to describe the last one." Bael gave another shrug. "They're mainly for protection." He didn't know what else to say. Alistair had always kept him safe, as did Salem, and Realm taught him to read with Nova. They were his friends, his teachers, his protectors. He nodded lightly as she explained what classes she was in. He had a few of the same ones, but when she mentioned Life Skills he grinned. "I like that class too. Mr. Cairo is the best teacher in the whole wide school."
"I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim."

Cora didn’t really know how to be what she was born to be, or whether she wanted to be either of those things really. She had had, what she was now realizing for what it was, the privilege of getting to just be a child up until now, but she knew it was only a few years until she’d be of age and in danger of someone trying to bind her to them. “Serve, protect, collect souls… Doesn’t sound fun at all. If my aunt can’t find a way to avoid it, I need to try to find someone who won’t actually want a slave when I’m all grown up, just to be safe from the bad demons. She says they’re as different as regular people and that makes me hopeful.” She trusted her aunt after all, if she said someone could be trusted to ‘own’ her, she would trust that.
“I still have most of my puppy fur, but when I’m all grown up, I’ll be all scales instead of fur,” she said, chewing her lip slightly. “Fire stuff is pretty cool to learn though, flying might be too eventually.” Cora wasn’t overly worried about scaring Bael right now, unless he asked to see her other form, but she just wanted to have a little fun and shifting kind of didn’t strike her as something that would be fun for Bael.
The look on Bael’s face was confusing, but she didn’t really understand the meaning of it and figured it was best not to question it right now. Questioning people wasn’t the way to make friends. “Sounds nice to always have friends around,” she said, meaning it too. Sure, she didn’t feel lonely, but he would never have to feel truly alone and that was nice. “And the ferret and tiger sound really soft. Like a good and safe friend to cuddle up to.” It sounded pretty awesome really.
Cora nodded at what he said. She really liked Cairo, he was nice and pleasant. “He’s so patient and kind. And a really good baker. I wish all the teachers were like him. I mean, I like my other classes too, but they’d all be so much better with teachers like that.”

"If you were me you'd know...but you're not, so don't think you do." When he'd been smaller, still living with his estranged mother he'd always assumed the theory of serve and protect to be something noble. When those words were spoken in the same sentence he imagined some brave knight who served a king and protected the land. Nova and Realm would tell him grand stories and before he'd pulled removed from school he'd see them in picture books. Even now he still had that childlike innocence about him, but the way Cora described it made him question what kind of person he was because when he really thought about it, his familiars served and protected him. They didn't collect souls that he knew of, but were they unhappy? They had after all been a gift from his father. What if they hadn't wanted to be bound to him? Salem didn't seem happy about it at all, but Nova and Realm and Alistair had never voiced complaints. Bael frowned a bit.
"What if you really like the demon you're bound to though," he asked quietly, his voice a bit less sure. He didn't want to think about his friends being unhappy. Bael didn't know how to release them if they were. Maybe Cora would give him an answer that would help ease his mind, even if she didn't know what he was hinting at. If Cora's aunt could find a way to save her, maybe he could piggyback off that information and release his demons. Bael would hate to see them go, but when he did, the world would be bleak. That made him sad.
He pushed the thoughts aside as the older child explained that she had puppy fur now, but would have scales in the end. He tried to recreate the image in his head. "Do you have horns or a pointy tail?" Bael didn't actually want to see what she looked like as a hellhound right now because he knew he'd be disappointed. He'd much rather see a full grown hellhound. Right now all he was getting was a big dog with snake scales. Maybe there was a book in the library or something on the internet. Bael found the library to be very useful. One, he was learning to read bigger words and at a faster pace because the staff was very helpful and he could find all sorts of supernatural history books. "Fur, fire, and flight? You've got a lot of powers," he commented. He was a little envious, but not too much. He was happy with his gifts.
"It is," he responded in regards to having friends around. "We can be friends too," he offered. "And I can introduce you to Hyze. She's really cool. I think she might be a little closer to your age too." Bael didn't mind being younger than most of his friends. He was proud to say that he was older than Luna and Moon though. It really was nice having kids around your own age to play with. "Maybe we can start a club," he suggested with a hint of excitement. An all kids club.
"He helped me with my birthday cake," Bael spoke. "It would be pretty cool if everyone was like him. Realm says that everyone is an individual though, and we should appreciate the difference." He gave a small shrug. "Whatever that means." He gave a small snort and pushed open the door that led to the playground. He liked it out here. "There's some soft blocks and things on the other side that we can use to make the course more challenging," he told her.
"I can't drown my demons, they know how to swim."

Cora made a thoughtful face at his question. It was something to think about for sure. After a few moments, she declared: “that wouldn’t be a bad situation.” If she found a demon she really liked, she probably wouldn’t mind having to do as he asked. “If I end up bound to someone that’s nice to me and doesn’t order me to hurt other people just for their amusement, it might be nice. I think I’m more scared of someone using me to hurt people than simply asking me to protect them or keep them company. Mom told me about her first master once. Said he was the best friend she’d ever had.” Honestly, if Dutch couldn’t find a way for her to avoid having to worry about being bound to someone, she would very much like to find someone who would just be a friend and be bound to them. It was just hard not to be scared of being bound to the wrong person since that was why she couldn’t grow up with her mother. If her mom had still been bound to her first master, she imagined she would’ve known her better too.
Did she have horns and a pointy tail? She didn’t think she did, so she shook her head at the question. “Can’t really fly just yet, my wings aren’t strong enough. It’s why I was running around with them out earlier. Or make much of a fire on purpose, so it’s all a learning process.” Cora didn’t really like to think of herself as special in any way, because the things that made her that way could also very easily make her a monster if she wasn’t careful and that was the last thing she ever wanted to be.
“A kids club…” she said thoughtfully. “That sounds awesome. I wonder why more of the kids around here aren’t in classes… Maybe I’m just the odd one out having grown up in human schools, but it seems useful.” More useful than living in the woods anyway. Who could possibly want to spend their entire life as a wolf, or fox, or hen or whatever kind of animal they could turn into? “Should definitely meet Hyze, more friends are always good.” Cora liked making friends.
“Sounds like Realm is pretty smart,” she commented. “Everyone likes different things so it makes sense that everyone’s different.” Following Bael into the playground, Cora nodded at what he said. “These?” she asked once she spotted what looked like it could be used to make a proper course. Thankfully for Bael, training with Dutch hadn’t moved onto obstacle courses yet, just relaxation exercises to keep her instincts all calm and under control.
