It was important to note that even though Ray was severely lacking in people skills due to having spent seventy long years in hell under Jerry he wasn't completely oblivious. In fact, he was pretty observant and you kind of had to be to be a decent detective. Case in point if he got the feeling you didn't like him he wouldn't pursue you further and leave you be. Ray could sense that Sage wasn't too keen at his attempt at dark humor; which was only further confirmed by Sage's verbal response. Ray rubbed his arm sheepishly and he frowned at Sage. "Oh sorry. I didn't mean that as a bad thing. I meant it as a compliment. See, I used to know some humans and I remember how when we were friends we would joke around a lot, but" he said sighing, "that was a long, long time ago and I forget that we don't know each other well enough to share such stories and jokes with. It's just that your chair joke has to be the first really good light joke that I've honestly heard in decades. Typically the only jokes I hear in hell are well you know not exactly the fun, happy go lucky kind. I guess I just got a little excited and ahead of myself when I heard your chair joke. Sorry about that."
The merman then went on to offer an explanation for the female author's quote. Ray certainly understood where the writer was coming from, but still was it so wrong to want a little 'thank you' here and there for his heroic efforts? Well the universe seemed to think so anyway since he was promptly tossed into the nearest madhouse for committing numerous acts of vigilantism. This was back when he was still a human, right before Jerry took his soul. So this wasn't the first time he had been tossed into an asylum, but the second time and like before he hated it. Ray just smiled at Devon. "Mmm...if you say so," Ray told him not wanting to argue about it anymore. After all, Devon and the author did have a good point. Ray sighed when all Devon could say was, 'uh huh' in response to Ray's query about his eyes. "I just mean you seem...distracted and bored is all, but I just don't see how that can even be since we have cigarettes. I mean how can anyone possibly get bored from smoking? Am I right?" Ray mused half jokingly in an attempt to lighten the mood. Ray let out a long exhale on his cigarette.
After dodging his ghostly father for a couple of minutes narrowly escaping possession, Sage finally banished his father away. Ray watched as his father was literally dragged back to the fiery pits of hell. Letting out a sigh of relief he layed his back on the ground and relaxed there for a few moments. As he layed there waiting for his rapid breathing to return to normal, the demon listened to the ectomancer's apology and while he certainly appreciated the apology he still wasn't too happy. Rolling over on his side he looked over at Sage. "Of all the ghosts you could have summoned why did you have to pick the worst one of the bunch? Just why? Also why did you summon a ghost to begin with when I specifically asked you not to and after you promised me you wouldn't? But not instead you ignored my warnings and summoned up my...Mr. Dalton anyway! And then you made the mistake of believing his lies. He's a compulsive liar. You can't believe anything he says and not only that, but he's dangerous! He very nearly possessed me! Do you realize had he succeeded in possessing me he would have used my powers to...well go on a murderous rampage," the demon scolded standing up and looking the human straight in the eye. The demon was angry and it was difficult for him to hide it. He also revealed his inability to call his father, 'dad.'
Not only did Sage summoning up his father make the demon angry, but now he and Devon were leaving. They were going to leave him all alone in the rickety old shed because in Ray's mind at least, they couldn't handle him or his power. On top of all that, Sage's excuse sounded disingenuous. Ray wasn't oblivious. He could tell that Sage just wanted to get the fuck out of there; which was just fine by Ray. What Ray wasn't okay with was how cowardly he was acting for not just saying it. It also offended him that Sage seemed to think that Ray would just buy his lame ass excuse. Additionally, it sounded like Sage was blaming him for his father's evil ghost showing up; which only made the demon all the angrier. He narrowed his eyes at Sage as though to say, 'are you shitting me here?' Firmly crossing his arms he just shook his head in disbelief at Sage.
Ray then watched as Devon whispered something into Sage's ear. Slightly annoyed, Ray just rolled his eyes. He then watched as the merman told the two bye before walking out of the shed. With the merman gone, Ray glanced back at Sage. "Are you seriously blaming me for the ghost you summoned here even after I warned you not to? It wasn't my fault he came here! It was yours. I certainly didn't want him here. I can't stand the guy. If you really are so tired of ghosts then maybe you should stop summoning them here!" Ray reprimanded Sage, angry. "Goodbye Sage. I'd hate to keep you from your appointment," Ray told him in a tone that told Sage that he was aware that he had no real appointment to run off to. "Oh and Sage one last thing, hopefully next time we meet there won't be any more ghosts or other surprises. That is if we do meet again. I realize I didn't make the best impression and I was hoping to make it up to you sometime. That is if you give me another chance. If not then that's fine too and I'll just wish you and Devon the best," Ray offered. He then watched as the ectomancer rushed out of the shed leaving him alone to his own devices.
Ray knew it would only be a matter of time before a guard showed up to drag him out of there. So he decided to mentally contact Jerry while he waited. He and his master shared such a strong bond that they developed a telepahtic connection. Unfortunately, the connection didn't work if they were too far from one another. But Ray knew it couldn't hurt to try. So tossing away his second shriveled up cigarette, Ray positioned himself on the ground and closed his eyes. He listened for Jerry and he waited. He called out to him telepathically to inform him of his location. 'Jerry? Are you there? If you can hear me then know that I am currently trapped inside of an insane asylum called, Manson Academy. Please hurry and get me out of here before I lose my mind completely!' Sadly he got no response; which told him one of two things. Either they were too far away or Jerry simply could not answer for whatever reason. Fearing for his master he hoped it was the former.
A loud knock on the door jolted him from his telepathic search for Jerry. Eyes still closed, a small, satisfied smirk crossed his face. "Come in," he pleasantly called. The intruder was none other than his guard who began yelling at him clearly angry that Ray knocked him out and escaped. Opening his eyes, Ray looked at him. "Have a nice nap?" he sneered.
Infuriated by that smart ass comment, the guard just grabbed Ray by his arm and forcibly cuffed him. He then practically dragged the demon behind him. As they walked across the grounds, Ray just smiled at his fellow residents. If he wasn't cuffed he would have waved at them.
Upon reaching Ray's room, the guard just uncuffed him and tossed him in locking the door behind him. Once again, Ray found himself stuck inside his boring, old room. Dusting himself off, he decided he would try to reach Jerry once again.
