Settling into this place had been a bit of a rollercoaster of experiences. So far, she had met someone who clearly had their head in the clouds, a few teachers and the most magical creature she'd ever seen. She hadn't quite gotten to the point where she wasn't angry about having her life taken from her, but she was starting to at least appreciate the wonders of the world she had been introduced to as a result. She would've much rather have been introduced to this without losing herself, but at least it was a lot of wonderful things to learn. Dev had gotten her hands on a joint earlier in the evening and was feeling calmer than she had in a long time. Especially after having breakfast as well. Once she had satisfied that hunger for a little while, she had found her bright pink bikini (she'd had to order one and have it sent to her) and gone to the pool. Once she had showered and changed, she found herself sitting at the edge of the pool and merely dipping her feet in. She'd go for a swim in a bit, right now she just wanted to do one thing that would make her feel like her old self again. And if she just leaned back on her elbows, tilted her head backwards and closed her eyes, she could imagine she was at a beach somewhere in the middle of the day. That mental image made her smile to herself, even if she knew she'd never actually get to feel the sun on her face again. When she finally slipped into the pool, she found herself relieved at how quiet it was underwater. In the sense that the sounds of the pool drowned out almost everything else. Since she was still so new to all this, she hadn't gotten out of the habit of breathing just yet, but being submerged in the deep end of the pool, she was pleasantly surprised that she didn't have to come up for air anytime soon. The urge wasn't there.

TIME
IT TOOK US TO WHERE THE WATER WAS
THAT'S WHAT THE WATER GAVE ME.
Devon has a good day with Ida. He thinks that helps him to feel a little settled in this academy. After their meeting at the lake, Devon goes back to his room at the dormitories and starts properly unpacking his stuff. He puts all of his clothes in the closet and his shoes at the racks. He does have a lot of things to place and put inside the furniture because he can’t let go of some of the things and clothing the he buys from his past travels before Manson. After he finishes, Devon thinks on what to do next and where to go. He loves the way he feels good in the lake so maybe another place where there is water? He nods at himself and tries to remember if there is an indoor pool here. He knows there is one so he changes into his proper swimming shorts because even though it is kind of late at night, there may be people there. It is an indoor pool after all so people will likely be in the pool at night because it is safer than being in a pool outside. He wears a muscle shirt for now which he’s going to take off anyway when he goes in the pool. He grabs his towel and walks out of his room to find the pool place. He decides to look at the map at the reception area. It’s just there like a tiny ass billboard anyway so better use it. He finds where it is so he starts going to the direction of the indoor pool. When he gets there, he sees that no one is there. Lucky him. He can have a relaxing night by the pool and maybe let his tail out for a few minutes. As he walks nearer to the edge of the pool, he takes a double take and notices that something, or someone, is beneath the waters. He watches for a minute and sees if the person will go up to gasp for air but it doesn’t. Maybe another sea creature? On the other hand, he knows that some creatures from land can breathe underwater for various reasons. So for that reason, he kind of puts his guard up just in case it’s a mean creature. Or just mean looking. Bad looking, to be straight forward. And that is worse for Devon. His eyes can’t handle ugly. It just cannot. He takes off his muscle shirt but decides against taking off his swim shorts. He looks at the person underneath the waters a little closer and notices that it’s a girl. Why can’t he meet a guy instead? He sighs inwardly and thinks about how much he wants to get pounded out real hard soon. He decides to sit by the pool and dip his legs for now. Devon didn’t want to freak out the other person and that may lead to her attacking him for freaking out thinking he may be there to hurt her. So as he dips his legs in the water, he swishes them back and forth. Devon decides to use his power to control water and make waves and he kind of overdoes it. He only wants to send some vibrations because any creature will notice that but he kind of makes a cute wave that splashes the water on the other side of the pool to the ground. Oops. He awaits the other person to go up and probably kill him.

The pool was so blissful. If it weren't for the fact that sooner or later she would starve if she stayed down there, or burn if the sun caught her in the water, she would've wanted to stay forever. No distracting heartbeats, no blood smells... It was perfect. Shame she hadn't been turned into some kind of water creature, she would've loved it. As she was so completely absorbed in the quiet, Dev lost track of time and wasn't aware of anyone else coming into the room until she heard someone break the surface of the water. Looking up for a moment, she contemplated resurfacing, but didn't really do so until it seemed like the surface rippled. She had to see what that was all about. That wasn't normal, might actually be amazing. Placing her feet at the bottom of the pool, she kicked off and made her way to the surface. She tried not to breathe through her nose when her head was above water again. "What was that?" she asked, referring to whatever had happened to the pool for a moment there. She probably sounded more amazed than annoyed though, because she was genuinely curious. Making her way over to the edge, she held on with one hand and offered the other to the guy. She could be proper at least. "I'm Devyn," she said, smiling slightly at him.

IT TOOK US TO WHERE THE WATER WAS
THAT'S WHAT THE WATER GAVE ME.
Devon kind of expects the response of the person under the pool as she pushes herself up to the surface. She asks what that is and she’s probably talking about the accidental big wave Devon causes. Whoops. She does not look pissed off so that is a good sign. Devon doesn’t know if anybody here is not dangerous. This is a place for troubled supernaturals so he does not expect anyone who can’t at least inflict some kind of pain to someone. The woman swims closer to him and then holds on the edge of the pool with one of her hands as the other reaches up near to Devon as she introduces herself as Devyn. This makes him laughs. What a coincidence. “Nice to meet you Devyn,” he says as he shakes her hand. Devon pronounces her name as de-vyn with a slightly elongated eh sound. It’s quite the opposite on how his name is pronounced. “My name is Devon,” he chuckles as he continues on to say, “We almost have the same name.” He throws his towel one of the sun chairs and then pushes himself down into the water. He dips his whole body and head and then quickly rises up to the surface. The iridescent glow of his skin starts to shimmer vividly as it usually does when he’s in the water or when the light hits him. He decides not to transform into his tail for now because he is not in salt water and swimming with legs is always fun for him because he never usually does it. It is much easier to swim with a tail that’s for sure. He wipes his face and then decides to float on water doing the spread eagle pose. His eyes go to Devyn as he asks her, “What brings you to the pool at this time of the night?” Devon continues to float around the pool aimlessly loving the feeling of the water moving around him. It’s definitely a lot more stagnant than the sea but him and Devyn being in it makes the water move a little even if they’re barely moving. He tries to assess on what kind of creature Devyn is. She definitely isn’t a human for staying under the water that long. Maybe she is though with powers that allows her to do it. Looking at her right now though, Devon sees her being pale as fuck and he knows that that kind of shade of pale isn’t humanly possible unless you’re a dead corpse. Maybe that’s what she is, a dead corpse. An alive dead corpse. He chuckles to himself at the oxymoron he just thinks of. What can be a dead corpse and be alive? A ghoul? A zombie? Oh, wait. Most likely is she can be a vampire. Damn, a bloodsucker in the pool. Another predator who is really famous with the humans for some reason. He guesses most of them slips up whenever they feed on humans that’s why they’re so known. A double edge sword for them. A great boost to their confidence because of the fear they are causing yet harder for them because their discovery even with just a little amount of proof can ignite a witch hunt on vampires and probably other supernatural creatures. But mostly them obviously. And werewolves, Devon thinks. They just go together with all the movies and shows and stuff. But what Devon shrugs off all those things in his head because he does not like assuming species and he’s not even sure. He’s smart but he’s definitely not the smartest crayon in the box.

Dev wasn't angry about whatever it was he'd done, she was amazed. It didn't matter what it was really, as long as he could do it again and show off. Because it looked epic underneath the water. She was curious, and frowned slightly when he didn't answer, but maybe it was best to do introductions first. That seemed like the polite thing to do and she couldn't help but join him in laughter when he introduced himself as well. It was amusing that the first person she'd met around here when she was in a good mood and not aching to bite them had a very similar name. "Guess our parents had similar ideas," she said, chuckling slightly. "Marina is my middle name, if that'll make it less amusing when someone inevitably introduces themselves to both of us at once," she added. She was feeling floaty right now though, so why not joke about a little. She was watching him when he got all wet and couldn't help but stare when his skin shimmered like that. It was amazing. Absolutely fascinating. Was he some kind of sea-creature? If so, she couldn't help but want to go swimming with him in the ocean. Surely he could show her a whole new world? "I can't go during the day," she replied, shrugging slightly. "Just wanted to feel like my old self for a moment, imagine my surprise when I realized I didn't have to come up for air anymore," she said, grinning at him. She was excited about that little tidbit. Excited she didn't have to breathe. This world was full of wonders and amazing people and even if she couldn't appreciate what she was just yet, at least she was learning to appreciate others for their amazing abilities. Even if she was staring slightly at Devon. "I'd suggest a race, but something about the way your whole being is reacting to water suggests it wouldn't be entirely fair?" she asked. She had been reading a lot recently, but that wasn't exactly the same as seeing for herself. "I was dumped here after having my life stolen, so the fact that nobody here is human is a little weird still."

When Devyn says that maybe their parents have the similar ideas about their names, Devon just shrugs. He doesn’t think of his parents that much. Maybe he should especially since he is the son of a pod leader. If he has stayed, Devon will be the next one in line to lead their pod. So he basically leaves a whole lot of responsibilities. That mess is way behind him now though. He doesn’t really care about it and honestly, he doesn’t want to be a leader. That’s too much for him and he just can’t handle thinking about things that aren’t really that important to him as a whole. The pod probably is better off with someone else to lead them after his father. Also, it’s not like his father is retiring anytime soon. He’s only four hundred something years old. He has like centuries to go before he retires. Well, unless he dies but Devon doesn’t see that happening. His dad is a very strong and powerful merman. Devon is still shocked that his dad hasn’t dragged him back to the ocean with how strict he is. Devon will probably call Devyn Marina instead because that will make their situation easier. “I think Marina is the way to go,” he tells her pushing her to go that way. Devon will not adjust his name so his subtly agreeing at Devon being called Marina instead. “Also, funny how Marina is somehow aquatic,” he says with a laugh but not explaining to her what it means. Devon is a water creature so her being called Marina still somehow connects to Devon. As usual, he makes himself laugh with his weird logic. Marina then proceeds to tell Devon that she can’t go to the pool during the day. This confirms Devon’s guess. Her saying that she just wants to feel like her normal self like before which means she isn’t a born vampire. Marina is a bitten one because her saying that means she is a human at one point in her life. Well, she can be probably something else but saying normal self means Marina is something mundane before the vampire transformation. Devon decides to just ask outright about it. “You’re a turned vampire then, huh?” he asks bluntly. There’s no etiquette here for asking because everyone is something. Even when you’re a human here, you’re still something else. Marina then tells him that she is about to suggest a race but the water reacts to Devon, she thinks she may not win. Devon looks at her then grins, his fangs growing, and tells her, “Yeah, babe, no. I have full advantage in any body of water.” Marina then says that she has been dumped in Manson and she’s obviously still learning about the place and how there’s nothing mundane here. There’s not one single human here. She also mentions that her life is stolen. Interesting. Devon is too lazy to bring it up though because he doesn’t want to hear sob stories with the wonderful night he is having. Devon then gives an answer to her with her last statement. “Well, this place is definitely not fit for a normal human,” he says as he continues floating, “this is for troubled people like you and me. Although I did come her voluntarily. Well, my dead grandma gave me a nudge but other than that, voluntary entry.” |

Of course, she didn’t know for sure what her parents had been thinking, she just found it amusing that she’d met someone with such a similar name. And unless he was way older than he looked, they couldn’t possibly that far apart in age either. Though in her case, it might’ve just been wishful thinking on her parents part. Her dad in particular was a bit old-fashioned and had always seemed to favor her bothers. So maybe they’d settled on a name before finding out she wasn’t a boy, who knew. Since she was apparently going to have to start over anyway, maybe it wasn’t all that absurd to change her name too. Or at least the order of them. Which was why she didn’t mind suggesting using her middle name instead to make matters easier. Dev didn’t mind the other Dev calling her Marina, it really did make things easier for them. So she nodded when he said it was the way to go. She could be pliable when it suited her. Or she was in the right mood. Both of which seemed applicable right now. Hell, even his question about her being turned probably would’ve earned him a snarky response any other day. Right now, she was still in a good mood from discovering that the pool really was a safe place form all the new sounds and scents. “Still technically a newborn,” she replied instead. “Going on maybe two-three months by now.” Had she really been here this long? Man, time really did fly when she was so intently focused on not eating everyone who walked past her. She was pleased with herself when he informed her that he had full advantage in any body of water. At least she was learning something around here. “It’s not just that,” she admitted. “I don’t have control over my speed. I still run into walls or doors when I try to use it on land, probably end up swimming straight into the edge if I tried in the pool. Just because I apparently can’t drown anymore, doesn’t mean hitting my head against the pool sounds pleasant,” she said, chuckling slightly at the mental image of someone trying to pull her out of a pool thinking she’d drowned. She was certainly cold enough to pass for drowned… There was clearly a difference between learning how to control her hunger and learning all the other things that came with what she was now. Sticking to blood bags sucked, but it kept her from trying to munch on everyone else, so it served a purpose. “I didn’t even know people like you existed three months ago,” she admitted. “Or cat-people, hell… even vampires… It’s a lot more to learn than just how not to try to eat everyone who passes by.” At least she seemed to be settling in, so even if she was still angry about how she wound up here in the first place as well as what she was, she was finding joys in all the other people here and how amazing they all were. It was progress in her mind. “What are you?” she asked, genuinely wanting to know for sure as she let go of the edge and swam a little closer. She wanted a closer look at those fangs. They looked so much more scary than her own, yet she wasn’t worried he’d try to eat her. It seemed vampires weren’t really on anyone’s menu, because who liked to eat dead meat?

When Marina tells him that she’s a newborn vampire and has only been one for two to three months, which makes Devon look at her. From what he knows, most newly turned vampires are very bloodthirsty and cannot control their newly found powers. Two to three months seems like a short time but as he continues to observe Marina, she looks like she’s in control of herself. Devon feels like she can control herself anyway that’s why he isn’t attacked the second he goes in the pool area. Devon has crossed paths with newly turned vampires and he can handle them but it’s just something he doesn’t want to do because containing them is such a hassle. He’s kinda in awe to see a new vampire handling herself nicely. Well, maybe that’s also because there are not much humans here to suck on. Devon thinks they like supernatural bloods too but some bloods just don’t mix well with theirs. He wonders how a vampire will react with merfolk blood. That’s a question for another day. Then, Marina ironically tells him that she still doesn’t have control of her powers after Devon thinks she is in control. Huh, maybe she can really just stop herself from acting like a crazy lunatic. That’s how Devon describes the newly turned vampires because they act like it. “Well babe,” he says as he pushes himself to move around with his arms now, “I heard a human expression and they say ‘practice makes perfect’ so maybe hitting a wall isn’t that bad. Maybe after a few tries you’ll just bump your head a little bit hard but not break it anymore.” He smiles at her. Devon has a point but he can’t help but continue to be a little bit of a dick with his replies. Devon will not be Devon if he doesn’t have these quips here and there. Marina also tells him that she doesn’t know about the supernaturals and mythical creatures are real until the time she becomes a vampire. She also says that her impulse not to eat people is hard but she seems okay controlling it for now. Devon just hums at her and says, “As long as you don’t starve yourself, I think you’ll be fine.” He thinks that is a good advice. She needs to just drink her daily intake of blood and not get hungry because that’s when they become crazy. It’s just now that she asks what Devon is. That’s probably because he shows her his fangs. Devon, being the attention whore that he is, chuckles at her as he positions his body and then swims under until he reaches the tiles underneath. He then pushes himself up and as he comes to the surface, Devon transforms into his true form as a merman as the shine of the moonlight hits his skin and scales at the right spots and his iridescent colour glows all around the area making a somewhat faded disco strobe light effect. He goes down eventually and then wipes his face with his webbed fingers with his claws out. He looks at the vampire and smiles at her. “Can you guess?” he says cheekily knowing full well that Marina knows about the stories, movies, and mythological “facts” about the merfolk. She is, was, a human two to three months ago. Merfolk are quite popular and kind of loved by people. Oh, if they only know… |

It was still tempting to tear into anyone she walked past, but Dev could be incredibly stubborn when she put her mind to it and she was determined not to end up in solitary for eating someone she shouldn’t have. So she drank more than her fill from the canteen every night when she woke up, just to keep that hunger down. That way, even if people were tempting, at least she could remind herself she wasn’t really hungry. She hadn’t kept her figure through her college years with unhealthy foods and partying on school breaks without the ability to go on strict diets when she needed to make up for it all. This was no different. Besides, that joint earlier had mellowed her out enough to properly enjoy the pool. Finding something she enjoyed about being dead made it a lot easier not to try to bite the man. Particularly when he screamed predator to her predatory instincts. At any rate, she just felt an overall sense of calm and that probably helped her more than usual right now. “At least hitting the wall trying to rush through the hallway won’t contaminate the pool with blood, so that’s also a bonus.” While she didn’t particularly care about the state of the pool per se, she figured maybe Devon would since he seemed so utterly at home in the water. Seem unfair to ruin that for someone when she too found pleasure in the pool. “Bagged blood has been an adjustment, but it seems to do the trick, so that’s good,” she said when he told her not to starve herself. Yeah, she’d learned that lesson already. It had ended up with her eating herself instead to avoid chomping on everyone passing by and she didn’t want people to think she was crazy just because she was hungry. Learning about all the creatures that lived here was an adventure all of its own and there were lots of fascinating creatures. That didn’t mean she’d expected Devon to actually grow a tail! When he was above water again, she swam a close enough to touch his scales. “You’re beautiful,” she said, unable to really keep the awe out of her voice, because he really was beautiful in his true form. “You’ve got to be a merman!” she exclaimed, feeling proud of herself even if that was a pretty obvious one now that she saw her true form. “You don’t look like the little mermaid version though, they don’t sparkle like you do.” Nor did they have webbed hands or fangs, but that part seemed a little rude to point out. She didn’t want people to think her fangs were weird after all when they were out and making a mess of things. And the glow really was beautiful, which was why she’d touched him in the first place.

Devon just laughs at the running through the wall in the hallways thing. It’s funny because it’s true. Devon likes the idea of not having blood in the water because it just doesn’t look nice even if the water isn’t from the sea. Saltwater or not, water is water for creatures like him. It’s still something precious for them. Well, Devon doesn’t want to assume and generalize but that is what he is thinking anyway. Marina says that bagged blood is an adjustment for her but it does the work. Devon nods at this and says, “You’ll get used to it, I think. I don’t know because being a mythical creature is like natural to me since I am born as one.” Devon always wonders how people adjust to being something they aren’t before. They now know about their world and then have powers they are new to. It seems like information overload and just shock inducing overall. Also, Devon thinks being a vampire kind of sucks in a way since you’re dead but you’re really not and people are afraid of them, the humans mostly, because of the way they have been portrayed throughout history. Well, there is truth behind the stories for sure but nowadays generalization seems to be the thing. It’s cute how the humans try to make shows about supernatural or mythological creatures that make them look and sound nice and heroic. Is it wishful thinking for them or do the writers know some creatures and they are basing it from real life experiences? Also, the way merfolk on shows are is kind of funny. Some things are accurate but some things are just not. It’s cute how they think most mermaids just fall in love with humans when they are barely as good looking as mermen or other mermaids. Oh well, Devon knows there are half-breeds walking around so it really happens anyway. After Devon makes the grand showing of his true form as a merman, Marina tells him that he’s beautiful and touches him, his scales specifically. Devon just basks at the compliment as he usually does and does a bow to her like he just finishes a broadway show. He goes underneath the water again as he uses his tail to maneuver himself around the pool. Devon wonders how his natural glow looks like from above with the clear water. The iridescent glow his skin emits is one of his favourite things about being a merman. It’s just so unique and wonderful. Everyone seems to be fascinated by it which Devon likes because it makes him the centre of the attention especially here at Manson because he can show it fully because there are no mundane humans around. Devon does not expect Marina to not know what he is because it is pretty obvious and merfolk is a super well-known in the human world because of certain shows and films. When Marina says he is a mermaid, he wags his index finger at him and says, “Merman is right!” Devon kind of expects her to say mermaid because people just say mermaid all the time. There are no famous mermen except for King Triton, which is also what the mermen are called, but he is not even the main character nor the main supporting character in the film. Oh well, beggars can’t be choosers. Marina then proceeds to tell him that he doesn’t seem to be like the mermaids in the famous human animated film because they don’t glow. Devon just shrugs as he continues to swim around and tells her, “They didn’t do research basically.” |

While she might not be a water creature, Devyn was seriously considering taking up swimming as a form of exercise after today’s discoveries. She could just swim along the bottom of the pool until she felt tired and it would be perfectly fine. Or at least swim under water until she was tired of it. She wouldn’t shrivel like a prune, wouldn’t be bothered by all the sounds because they’d be muffled and she had a perfectly nice distraction from that hunger that only ever seemed to dull down to feeling peckish but never completely go away. Which was part of the reason why she wasn’t all that eager to use her powers to try to swim really fast and risk mucking up the pool. “Been told I will,” she replied simply. She didn’t entirely believe that when drinking right from the source was so much tastier and that’s what she’d been raised on her first two weeks in this life. “Definitely better for overall mood stability than the junkies my sire threw at me before he ditched me here.” She might not be at peace with what she was yet, but at least getting away from him and mostly sobering up had made that irrational anger go away. Sure, she was still easily angered, but she wasn’t likely to explode over the simplest of things. If Devon had voiced his thoughts about being a vampire sucking, he would’ve found not protests with the vampire. She saw no upsides to her current state of being. At least not yet. She figured maybe she’d get to see some bright sides eventually, but it seemed far off. Just because she wasn’t in a foul mood right now, didn’t mean she wasn’t still angry about being turned into this without having a say in the matter. It had been impossible not to touch the merman because he was gorgeous. She liked shiny things and he definitely qualified right now. When he went back under the water, she swam back to the edge just so she could get a better look at him as he swam around. What a marvel! This was one of the few good things about her new life she supposed, getting to see things like this. Getting to see them and not think she’d lost her marbles. Because if she was dead, yet living, then of course people could turn into animals or merpeople. “Needless to say, you’re the first merman I’ve ever met,” she said, knowing full well that it was a bit redundant to say after telling him she’d only been a part of this world for a few months. There weren’t any other mermen around Manson as far as she knew, at least not that she had seen, so obviously he’d be her first. “What more can you do?” she asked, hoisting herself onto the edge of the pool. Hey, she couldn’t compete with a merman, even she knew that, why not just keep her legs submerged and be better equipped to fully watch him enjoy himself with threading water to stay afloat enough to be able to talk to him?

Marina tells Devon that he is the first merman she has met. Well, she is new to the supernatural world so that’s not really surprising. “There are not much mermen walking around the earth compared to mermaids and sirens,” he tells her. That’s the truth because mermen are more wary of the land dwellers. They are naturally curious but most of them will not walk on land unless they really, really want to. Marina then asks him what else he can do. That question is often asked from him and he expects the question to be raise with meeting people. Devon doesn’t mind though but sometimes he wishes supernaturals educate themselves to the basics of merfolk power just like with werewolves and vampires and angels and all those popular creatures. Mermaids are popular but the only thing they know is that they are half fish and sings to lure the sailors to their death. Devon doesn’t blame Marina though but he blames the human world for making them so one dimensional. “Well, us Merfolk have siren voices which is kind of known becaue of the myth of mermaids singing and all that,” he starts off as he reverts back to his legs. He looks around and sees his shorts floating around the pool by the corner so he goes to grab and wear it. “I also have my claws and my sharped teeth,” he says as she finishes putting on his shorts, “And remember the disturbance in the water when you were underwater? I can create waves too. It depends on me on how strong or big the waves are.” Devon then continues to swim around with his legs slowly but surely pushing himself around. It feels better to swim with his tail but he loves doing it with his legs too just because he has his left and right legs to move to do it. It is something foreign to him and he will always feel weird but it just makes him happy knowing how to swim with legs. Devon can swim a hundred times faster with his tail too but with legs, he still has undeniable speed comparing it to humans. “Oh, and like most supernatural creatures, I am a hundred times physically stronger than humans,” he says. When Devon gets in trouble with the humans during his travels, he likes to fight them off for fun and he mostly uses his kicks as his legs are strong from all the swimming he does. Devon likes to add flair of drama and beauty to it though so he learns to do some gymnastics and contemporary ballet moves to add poses and styles to his kicks. “But,” he says as he looks up to the beautiful moon tonight, “not all merfolk can do the same things. One thing we can all do is the siren voice as it is what makes us, I guess.” That is true. He knows some mermaids who can do far more exciting things than he can but not really stronger per se. Also, there are some who can’t do things other than the siren voices and the transformation with claws and fangs. Devon thinks it’s because of evolution and adaptation just like normal humans and animals do throughout the century, only with magic. |

Aside from the fact that she had lots to learn about this world, it was nice to know it wasn’t entirely her fault she didn’t know more about mermen. If there weren’t all that many of them walking about, surely the other people in this place wouldn’t have met a whole lot either, so she could be excused for not knowing more than what that beautiful tail meant in terms of what he had to be. She’d seen the little mermaid after all, it was a staple of any girl’s childhood as far as she was concerned. “How come your kind don’t come on land too often?” She asked, wondering why the females of his species were more prone to walking on land than the males. Were they just naturally more curious? Or maybe there were just more of them to begin with? These seemed like important pieces of information to put in place. Learning that Devon had a magical voice wasn’t really all that surprising. “You’ve mentioned both mermaids and sirens, but modern day adaptations of anything kind of merge them together. Is there a huge difference?” It was confusing. If merpeople had siren voices too, why were sirens still considered a separate species? Wasn’t that the same thing? It seemed best to ask though, so as not to accidentally offend someone later on. Sure, she knew she could be a self-righteous bitch at times and strive to be the best at everything, but learning everything there was to learn about supernatural creatures meant she’d be better equipped to handle her new world down the line so it did seem important to learn from someone who’d give her facts and not just myths in a book. Oh! So that’s what that disturbance had been! She was absolutely fascinated. Sure, a part of her kind of wanted to study him under a microscope or draw him, but she figured it was best just to study him by asking questions and listening to him talk instead. “Got it, don’t piss off supernaturals,” she said, running a hand through her still wet hair. “I guess I’m stronger now too, haven’t really explored that…” She said, thinking out loud more than anything really. She might still be hungry all the time and struggle with her senses and temper most of the time, but she was starting to feel a little bit more like herself again in the sense that she was finding things she enjoyed doing. Well, one thing. Not drowning. “You doing anything later?” she asked, as she got an idea of something she wanted to do. “Maybe it’s the fangs that make you read as a predator to my instincts, because I don’t have an overwhelming urge to try to eat you like most people around here… But I suddenly got the urge to test my tolerance for alcohol, and it’d probably be better to do that around someone I’m not likely to try to bite.” She could use a drink, and if she got wasted around someone she didn’t instinctually view as food, maybe she’d be able to avoid biting someone else too.

Marina asks him why his kind does not come to land much often and Devon just thinks that it’s kind of obvious. “Well, land is not our home in the first place,” he tells her. That’s the number one answer to that question. Yes, merfolks are naturally curious about the above their surface and the land dwellers but they know better than to expose their kind to the humans. Devon is a very young merman but his pod has told stories throughout the centuries on how dumb and stupid humans are. They also say that they are blabbermouths and their kind has been threatened with exposure a few times in history because some mermaids do stupid stunts. Of course, Devon being on land now is kind of a stupid stunt but he is from a new era of merfolk and he likes to think that hiding his true self is easier now especially with other kinds knowing about each other and sometimes they cover each other’s tracks so humans won’t know the truth about them. Devon is not shocked that Marina is kind of confused about merfolks and sirens and why he still says that he has a siren’s voice. “Well, I am only basing this answer from the knowledge I got from my pod and some neighbouring pods because I am a very young merman,” he tells her as a warning because history passed through time can have some alterations and changes. “But yeah, Sirens are the original mermaids. They used to be winged creatures instead of having tails. That’s the general consensus. When they got their tails and lost their wings, that is when the start of our lineage. There are differences I am sure because I’ve met a siren here in Manson and she can’t get out of the water for too long which is very old school while I can stay as long as I want. Well, just don’t douse me in saltwater then I won’t transform back to my tail. Powers too varies through evolution I would think.” Devon takes a dive under the water this time because he just hates explaining a lot of things but he likes this vampire girl so he doesn’t feel annoyed that he is elaborating stuff. Honestly, Devon kind of likes educating the newborn just because she is new to the supernatural world. He goes up and wipes his face with his hands and hears Marina says that she may have to explore her new powers and strength. Devon nods at that. “Yes, you definitely need to practice and see how far you can go and what your limits are,” he tells her. It’s better that Marina knows what she can do and see her limits so she can control herself better. There will never be a human that turns into a mermaid or a merman so Devon doesn’t know how to train a newborn but maybe he can find her a vampire mentor or something. Everybody needs a mentor or something especially in this kind of situation. Marina suggests on trying to test her limits with alcohol and Devon thinks it over. His only plan tonight is to be in the pool until he grows tired and he’s trying to see if he can muster up any energy to do what Marina wants. “If you have any right now, I’m down to do it here by the pool,” he tells her, “Being at the pool is the only thing I decided tonight and then face planting myself on my bed.” He really is not up for anything now or later because he is going to be partying with Ida and Louis tomorrow night so it’s a good idea to rest tonight. |

Dev raised an eyebrow at him when he merely said land wasn’t their home in the first place. That much was obvious. “I didn’t mean more specifically why mermaids are more likely to go on land than mermen,” she clarified. Anyone with half a brain would understand that land wasn’t the home to most merfolk, and why it wasn’t home to more was pretty self-explanatory if you had that in mind. It was, however, a matter of interest to her why the females of the species were more prone to venturing on land than the males. She didn’t believe it was because there weren’t any decent guys among them, because that would just be ridiculous. She nodded at what he said. It made sense that he’d base it upon what he’d heard and she could respect that he was still a young merman. In fact, it was rather refreshing that he didn’t pretend to be all-knowing and older just because he’d been born into this world. “That is absolutely fascinating,” she said when he was done, genuinely meaning it too. The fact that evolution played a part, even in the supernatural world… She’d never thought about it like that before, but it made sense. She might have to track down this siren at a later date to learn more about the things she’d seen throughout her life. If there was one thing she knew she definitely needed, it was a vampire to teach her the ropes, but sadly, nobody seemed interested or available. So she was sort of figuring things out on her own. Aside from the blood bags, that had been a great tip from an otherwise useless guy. She would get the hang of everything in time, she knew that, but she’d rather just get the hang of what she needed to learn so she wouldn’t feel so out of control and like she’d lost herself. There were only three reasons why she hadn’t tried to bite Devon already. One, she’d eaten plenty for breakfast. Two, he had really sharp teeth and felt more like a predator than prey to her right now. And three, he wasn’t actively bleeding right now. “Any suggestions on the best way to test my limits?” she asked, pulling her legs out of the pool too so she could lay down on the side of the pool and turn her head to look at him. “I’d ask my sire, but he severed the bond and left me here, so I really am all alone in figuring things out.” Sure, maybe she’d been partly to blame for the guy leaving her in the first place. She had been kind of a bitch to him about all this, but at least she was trying now, right? Trying on her own terms and not someone else’s. That seemed to be the way to go. “Some other night?” she suggested when he said he’d only planned on staying in the pool and going to bed. She didn’t really have any alcohol with her after all, but she definitely wasn’t all that eager to get drunk on her own. It seemed like a bad idea. “I can probably find someone else to babysit me if needs be, drinks just seem like a good way to try to make friends. I’m not very good at the whole keeping friends thing.” Especially not when she was trying to to make and keep friends sober.
