Fabian would not say he was a particularly bad tempered person (though others might disagree), sure he did not always say a whole lot and you would likely get blood from a stone easier than you would a conversation from him but that did not mean (he felt) that he was a moody person. Today though, with the long shift and the heat... yes, he could feel a certain tension inside of himself, the feeling he used to get more when forced into situations as a child he did not want to be in. A restlessness, pacing. His wolf wanting to just bite every annoying resident that caused him trouble for no understandable reason. It was why the guard took himself out of the Secure Facility, went on break and headed directly towards the lake.
The swimming house was far too busy for him to want to cool off in there and being that he knew one of the lake's residents well, he wasn't worried about dipping his feet into the waters or his whole body should the desire overcome him. For now though he just through off the top half of his stiflingly hot uniform, placed it to one side along with his socks and boots and flopped down at the lakeside, using his gift to pull at its waters and create a cooling spray over himself.

Half the time these days, the lake seemed like the best place to spend the daytime hours. Keep her from drying out and all. She spent some days on land, sure, she had things to do, but most of the time she was more than happy to just help Kaia with her plants or hauling something to the lake for her if she needed things. Today, however, she had been happily lazing about near the bottom just watching the nymph at work.
She perked up when she saw movement at the surface though and poked her head above water in time to watch the guard spray water over himself like that. Grinning slightly, she took a moment to swim around close to the lake's surface before she used her tail to splash water on him. Better to be properly soaked in her opinion than just barely sprayed with cold water. "You looked like you could use a proper cool down," she offered by way of apology before she swam closer to the guard and found a nice spot to just rest her arms and head on land and keep the rest of herself submerged. The way he could use water like that, he had to be the guard Kaia liked so much.
"You're Fabian, aren't you?" she asked anyway, just to be on the safe side. "How do people move about on land without drying up in this heat?" she knew that probably wasn't something he'd be able to answer readily anyway, since she knew people didn't dry up the way she did, but it seemed like a good starting place anyway to gather a little more information.

Fabian was not focused on the lake, he saw nobody around the surface to worry about and those he knew of that lived below were not on his radar as being dangerous either, so he was content to just lie back and relax while trying to cool off. If anyone approached from elsewhere he would smell them anyway so he saw no reason why he can’t try and enjoy this break without having to actually be on his guard.
But then an added spray of water fell over him and Fabian sat up suddenly, spluttering a little since he hadn’t expected that one and focused to the water where it came from. Ordinarily that kind of thing would get you dragged into detention but Fabian was far too hot to bother and he actually appreciated the action. A little warning might have been nice but still he wasn’t going to complain, he might be soaked but he was cooler now. “Thanks.” Fabian said and leaned back on his elbows again and focused to who he assumed was Ida, since it clearly was not Kaia.
She seemed to know who he was too and so Fabian nodded as she asked, “Yeah.” assuming that the connection was again through Kaia since the two women lived down there, he assumed they must talk to each other.
As for her other question, the guard gave a shrug. “No idea.” Sure he knew the question was not asked in a literal sense but all the same, Fabian was just as confused as to how anyone was coping much less enjoying this heat when they can’t even control water to cool themselves down. “Immune?” Was all he could offer up as an explanation, sort of just able to adapt maybe.

As long as Ida stayed close to the lake right now, or didn't spend more than a few hours out of water at a time, she seemed to be doing fine, but she had been wondering how the heck she was meant to get anything done on the grounds until it cooled down a little again. At least in her true form, she wasn't overly bothered by heat or cold, but she couldn't very well move about on land like this, so it was best to just find things to do in the water instead.
Since she wasn't feeling worried about this guy at all, it seemed perfectly safe to rest her head like that. She wouldn't have gotten close enough to land like that if she was worried he'd run away because of her sharp teeth or try to hurt her. Nah, she felt perfectly at ease where she was right now. "Anytime," she said, tracing her finger gently along the grass.
"Must be," she replied, chuckling slightly. "More than a few hours at a time and my skin starts flaking, regardless of how much water I drink... seems best to stay at home then." Ida didn't mind staying in the lake, but if she was going to be stuck in water for a while, she would rather go back to the ocean for the summer. Then again, she didn't particularly like the lack of privacy. At least in the lake, there were places she knew she'd be left alone.
From Kaia, she knew that Fabian wasn't really the talkative type, so she wasn't going to ask way too many questions. However, she did have one or two she felt like were reasonable. "Have you seen what Kaia's working on?" she asked, curious if the nymph had mentioned it before. She really was doing a lot of work to clear up the lake.

Since he was soaked anyway, Fabian took the chance to cool the water covering him a little more. It was easier to do now he didn’t have to use effort to create the water as well, it was just a matter of altering what was there. In this heat he had no doubt it would melt again soon enough but he would enjoy the cool while it lasted and evaporated off his body.
By now he would have hoped to have gotten used to the summer heat but apparently not… He wouldn’t say it but he was relieved to see someone else found this heat and others apparent love of it all a bit ridiculous too, maybe was suffering a little more? Fabian was just glad his skin wasn’t flaking as that sounded unpleasant and a bit worrying, something Zevren might get worried about too. His did get dry but it was nothing that some rehydration and slapping on some cream didn’t fix. “Probably.” he said in agreement with Ida and staying in the lake was better, it wasn’t like he really knew much about siren-types but flaky skin was bad on anyone so if you can do something to avoid it, it was probably best to take it.
As for Kaia, Fabian shook his head a little. “No.” He remembered she was trying to get her cave looking nice but how and what she was doing he didn’t have a clue or if indeed that was what Ida was referring too. “What is she working on?” he asked a moment afterwards. This heat really zapped what little enthusiasm he had for conversation but he felt he should make an effort for one of Kaia’s friends, he liked the nymph and Ida seemed nice enough so far.

Ida figured that if she had been a land creature, she might’ve been better adjusted to hot summer days. As it was, she wasn’t overly bothered as long as she was in her natural form. Similar to how the cold didn’t bother her in this form really. She kinda figured the two were related. Being in water was definitely preferable to being on land right now. She’d still go do stuff later, probably, when the sun had set, but until then this was much, much better.
Kaia was doing wonders with the lake. Not just the underwater cave, but also the work she was doing to clear up the water. “She is creating a filtration system,” she said, smiling slightly. “Making water plants to help clear up the water, it’s turning the lakebed all pretty.” And probably prime for some fresh-water clams… Maybe she could just invest in a little clam farm and hope they produced pearls… That would be wonderful. Especially since they would be perfect snacks too, so it wouldn’t be wasteful. And wouldn’t hurt the lake fish.
“To have your gifts… Must be wonderful,” she said, smiling at the thought. Sure, she didn’t want to trade or anything, but the thought of being able to use water for anything seemed amazing. “Do you like music?” With anyone else, she wouldn’t care, but considering it was the head of security, it seemed best to ask and not just start singing.

Shifting closer to the water Fabian leaned forward and stared into the depths, he couldn’t see a whole lot of the world beneath and briefly he wondered just how Kaia and Ida managed to move around without getting tangled up in the various plant life. Sure the lake was big and deep but still, he could only think between them they had cleared a few paths. It was something that would need doing occasionally to keep the lake healthy and if they were willing he wouldn’t tell them not to, it made it less risky for those without gills should they decide to dive on in on these hot days. Fabian was pretty tempted to do just that but for now he stayed on land, and soon refocused to Ida who said Kaia was indeed doing a cleanup of sorts.
“Oh.” Fabian said and for a moment looked over the water again. It would be nice to have it a bit clearer but honestly Fabian had always thought by nature lakes were kind of dark and murky. “Sounds like a lot of work.” he added as he went to put his feet into the water, with his trousers already being soaked he didn’t bother rolling them up and instead just enjoyed the coolness against his skin. Fabian was sure someone in maintenance could make up something to clean the lake but he guessed doing it the natural way with plants was better, kinder to the fish too so he didn’t offer the suggestion.
When Ida mentions his gift and it being a wonderful thing to have though Fabian was a bit surprised, he just assumed she controlled the water too but she made it sound like she couldn’t. “I do like it.” Fabian said as he pulled a ribbon of water up from the lake in an arch, he was born with the ability so to not have it was almost unthinkable now.
He let it drop as Ida asked about singing, “Um, depends on the genre.” he said carefully. She wasn’t going to burst into song, was she? To Fabian that seemed like something that out of politeness he might have to listen to even if he didn’t want to.

Ida was used to murky lakes at this point, and rarely got tangled in anything, but if she had gotten tangled she’d easily be able to get herself freed. So she wasn’t overly worried, she was just more pleased to have somewhere deemed safe to stay while she was learning what she needed at this place. If there hadn’t been a lake, she would’ve had to just give up on the world and go back to the sea, or found someone willing to teach her that happened to live somewhere either by a lake or by the sea. Thankfully, this place really did have everything she needed.
“It seems like it too,” she admitted. She wouldn’t pretend to understand how Kaia could do what she could, but it was amazing to watch her work at times. She really was magical. “I can’t really help outside of bringing materials if she needs something she can’t make.” Since she was growing things herself, it seemed only fair that Ida help bring stuff like books on lake plants and gravel should she need it. “Feels good to be a little useful though, so I don’t mind getting stuff if she asks.” Besides, she wasn’t worried about going to town after dark so there wasn’t really much she couldn’t get if they needed it.
Ida watched when he made the water arch like that, always amazed when people could control an element that was so essential to her way of life. “Man, if I could control water, I imagine living on land would be much safer and easier. Water from the air is more natural than showers after all. Rainwater doesn’t make me change into this, though I imagine if I fell into a sink hole of it, it might, but I don’t dry out when it rains. Otherwise, it seems I’m confined to places with a lake or the sea a day or two away at most.” Ida didn’t mind having to return to the water though, it was familiar and all. And she kind of liked how she wasn’t overly affected by temperatures in her natural state.
While Ida had originally intended to sing if he said he liked music, his answer made her rethink that position. “I figured the best way to get caught up on some of the stuff I’ve missed out on is to ask others what they like to listen to,” she said instead. It wasn’t a lie either, she had asked multiple people already and was starting to put together a playlist of things she enjoyed listening to. “What sort do you like to listen to?”

If he could help himself then Fabian would do so but beyond telling maintenance about Kaia’s plan and getting them to make something, he didn’t know what he could do to make the whole process quicker and easier. He was still thinking that the natural way was what Kaia wanted and that left him unable to help, wasn’t like he could breath underwater and creating an air pocket would last minutes at best. It sounded like Ida was a bit disappointed to not be able to help more too but still, she was doing more than Fabian was himself if she brought in new plants and that left the guard feeling a little bad that he couldn’t help his friend with such a large project. Fabian did consider Kaia a friend too, something that surprised him a little now he thought about it since he was not historically very good at making friends or indeed keeping them for long. “I’m sure she appreciates it.” Fabian said while slowly kicking his feet a little in the water. Kaia was too nice to not be thankful for any help.
Showing off was usually seen as a bad thing outside of certain context so Fabian thought he probably shouldn’t display what he could do too much, he didn’t want to upset Ida by making a big performance she can’t ever copy despite being a water-species. The arch he made was done from habit really, mention his gift and he couldn’t help but give a small demo just to prove to himself it was still there. Since being turned he would admit he had a tiny fear that it might one day be swallowed up by the wolf gene, after so many years the fear was getting less though. He supposed being born with his gift it might just be a stronger trait.
Changing when it rained though would suck so Fabian was glad that was not the case for Ida, though he imagined having to avoid big puddles must still be a little problematic in a country where it did seem to rain a lot. Fabian was glad his gift did not restrict him in any way, yes he did get annoyed with the heat more but he didn’t need to stick near any lakes or other sources of water to survive. It was good in that sense that Ida had Kaia for company, she couldn’t be out the water either from what Fabian remembered.
Fabian never thought music as being something to catch up on events by, he wasn’t sure how that exactly worked, especially if the person liked old music. But if Ida wanted to know Fabian would share, he was honestly grateful at this point she wasn’t bursting into song… “Um, heavier stuff. Rock, industrial.” Something about the loud and chaotic nature of the style seemed to drown out the usual chaos he had going on in his mind from work.

This place seemed to hold a limited amount of people that could both breathe under water and grow plants. She could do one, the fae she had see on the grounds seemed only capable of doing the other. So unless Kaia could think of a different way she could be of help, bringing stuff down from the surface seemed like the best she could do. Better than nothing at the very least. She didn’t like being useless.
She nodded at what he said. Kaia did seem to appreciate a lot of things more than most people. It was one of the things she loved about the nymph, just how easily she was amazed at things as well as how easy it was to make her happy.
Ida hadn’t minded the display at all. She marveled at abilities like that. It was amazing how humans had evolved over the years. How some had amazing abilities while others were perfectly normal. “Feel free to show off anytime you come to the lake,” she said, chuckling slightly. “I love watching Kaia play with the water, it’s amazing.” She didn’t want him to feel like he had to hold back just because she couldn’t manipulate water. She was old enough to be able to appreciate things without getting jealous just because she couldn’t do it herself.
Music seemed like a good way to catch up on parts of the culture she’d missed out on. It was part of the reason why she kept asking people their preferences so she’d have more of a selection to go from. “Don’t think I’ve explored that option yet,” she admitted. “It seems like the best way to get a little idea of the culture I’ve missed out on. Can read up on history, but culture is a bit different.”

Showing off wasn’t really in Fabian’s nature (unless drunk, apparently) but he nodded to the offer to do so when he was near the lake again. If a gift like his own was something Ida enjoyed to witness then maybe it couldn’t really be classed as showing off but rather putting on a show or preforming? In those circumstances he knew it was expected to make it known what you can do, people are expecting it. The guard had liked seeing Kaia throw snow around and the ice wolves she made were amazing too, so he could understand why Ida might want to see. “Ok.” he added on just to show he was willing, though if this heat continued then he could see himself stripping off and just going swimming in the lake. That was a whole other kind of show…
If asked Fabian would have shown Ida a few examples of what he listened to when he needed to relax, it might not seem relaxing to most but he found it worked for him. Ida’s reasoning for wanting to know made sense when she explained, culture you had to live really, experience as words can’t do the same justice. “Makes sense.” he replied, just as filler really since he was lacking ideas of how to keep the conversation going. He would blame the heat if asked, it really was zapping his creativity right now.
Pulling at the water again Fabian splashed himself and just let the water drip down, then decided he really didn’t care how wet he got and slid into the water, diving under and then coming up a short distance from the edge. Most might be told it was a bad idea, especially with any clothing on, but most could not control the water like Fabian did so he really wasn’t at any risk right now.
If Ida could control water he would have suggested a game but since she couldn’t he thought it might be a bit unfair, with his brothers on really hot days they made a ball of water to throw to each other and the first to burst it got soaked and was the loser… Looking to the water he made one anyway, she might still want to bat it around. People often seemed fascinated by the object.

For some reason, the ones around here she appreciated the most seemed to be the same people she once would’ve considered dinner if she got too hungry. The gifted human were a marvel. Sure, Fabian was a wolf, and Ida didn’t know if he’d been born that way or made, it seemed rude to ask, but he still had a marvelous gift. It seemed almost a shame not to ask him to show off and use his gifts when she knew Kaia too appreciates them. No, he shouldn’t have to hide what he could do just because she couldn’t. Heck, if she wasn’t going to show off what she could do because others couldn’t, she’d never be able to swim in the ocean around people again. Or sing for that matter, even if her powers had been limited.
Ida couldn’t blame Fabian for not being very talkative. She had heard he wasn’t talkative at the best of times, and this heat was zapping everyone. She wasn’t particularly talkative herself these days, preferred staying in the lake and was happy to just float about the bottom. But she liked when people came to the lake, which was why she’d come up to greet Fabian in the first place. Sure, it wasn’t her lake, but it was her home for the time being.
Even if some might say it was a bad idea for Fabian to slip into the water like that with clothes on, Ida didn’t think it was. Not just because he could clearly control the water, but also because neither she nor Kaia would actually let anyone drown if they could help it. She didn’t want to get in trouble for not helping out and Kaia was just too kind not to help out.
When the ball of water was thrown at her, Ida poked it gently. It was amazing really. Now that he was in the water properly though, Ida pushed herself away from the edge of the lake and dove under for a moment before she emerged again on the other side of Fabian. “This place is great,” she commented, happy to just be able to be herself like she could around here.

Fabian rarely heard Manson described as ‘great’, he assumed that was because he worked in the lower levels of the Secure Facility for a majority of his time here. Down there were a lot of rules and restrictions, he found people rarely enjoyed being told what to do or the word ‘no’ and so any opinion formed of a place that tells you ‘no’ a lot was bound to be negative. On his promotion he hadn’t actually found out if things were different but then he had never bothered to ask either. Still, it felt a little odd to hear Ida describe the lake as such, though he was inclined to agree with her.
But Fabian could not be too negative about water especially when the knew this area of water was home to one of his favourite people and someone else who was friends with one of his favourite people.
Reaching out Fabian took the ball of water he had made and just tossed it up and down in the air, it would hold shape as long as he kept some focus to it and within a few metres of himself, then he pulled himself up to sit on the water just so he could focus on keeping it in form and himself up (it took the same skill after all) rather than swimming too. It wasn’t exactly difficult to split his focus but in this heat, everything was a little harder than it should be.
"We need an outdoor pool." he commented, just thinking out loud right now. The swimming house was fine most of the year but it did get hot and in the summer an outdoor area to relax and swim sounded lovely.

In all her years, Ida had rarely found somewhere she could call home that she could just be herself and not be called a monster. The rocks she’d grown up on, the lake she’d lived in when she was eating vampire scraps and this place were pretty much it. It was hard not to find someplace to be great, regardless of its limitations, if she could just be what she was and look how she looked in the water without being treated like a monster or a freak. So far, nobody had come to the lake, seen her true form and run away screaming. That alone made her feel right at home at Manson.
Ida was kind of just drifting along the surface of the lake as she watched Fabian sit on the surface like that and play with his element. It made her smile just watching him. In many ways, it made her wonder if like was harder for someone with gifts like that out in the human world then herself. To be able to do such things and have to keep them hidden! It seemed like a crying shame.
“Should get someone to dig one using their powers,” she suggested, totally agreeing with the idea itself. “Could be considered training, or exercise or something…” Seemed only reasonable to her if people needed to blow off steam and could control elements to put them to good use towards something.
