Cora had always figured that her aunt and mother were violent by choice. She hadn’t realized it was somewhat related to what they all were until today because nobody had told her what exactly furies were meant to do. She gathered from what little she’d learned that hellhounds were meant to drag souls to Hell, which didn’t sound pleasant either, but all she’d really known about furies were that they could fly. And that the two that she did know seemed to always be itching for a fight.
The girl had been minding her own business, sitting outside with her books to try to do a little homework when she overheard someone arguing about something or other. Putting her book down, she walked a little closer to try to see what was going on, and was surprised at how angry she was getting. It was just so unfair! Now, if someone had explained to her what she was made to do, she would’ve understood where the anger was coming from, but right now it just made her scared as well.
Cora hadn’t learned how to safely conjure fire yet, so she had no control over what happened next. When her hands caught fire, she shrieked and ran off, desperately trying not to touch anything. She didn’t stop running until she reached the lake. “Please work,” she mumbled as she stuck her burning hands into the water. Underneath that fear of what was wrong with her, she was seething with anger and was desperately trying to put out the fire erupting from her hands. As long as she kept them submerged, it seemed OK, but the moment she pulled one out, it started all over again. So she was stuck where she was, keeping her hands under water until she could figure out how to calm herself down again to stop the fire.
“Hello?!” she called out, hoping someone in the vicinity would hear her. Hopefully, one of those guards Damian had spoken about, but anyone who could help would be welcome now. “Someone please help!” Well, she could only hope someone would show up, until then she could only be relieved that it seemed to be just her hands and that she hadn’t started a fire on the grounds. She just had to figure out how to put it out outside of water.

"Give me your hands."
He spoke from behind her, the man seeming to materialize out of thin air....which of course is exactly what he'd done. He was in his office when he heard her cries, and turned to mist to be sucked out the window and rocket over to her. He wore a blue V neck sweater, with a white T shirt underneath. His black framed glasses and relaxed slacks was indicative of his position as a staff member. She might not realize that though. He would slowly move to a knee and gently take her hands, assuming she offered them. She'd feel a little pressure- not uncomfortable- as air would wrap around her hands, suffocating the flame. He'd give a quirk of a brow.
"You're a Fury, little one. Did you brood not teach you to control your gifts?"
He tilted his head to the side a little, searching her eyes. From his understanding, Furies were taught from a young age about anger. Hatred. Heat. Flight. Some, were taught to kill. This one was young, so it's possible she was here because she hadn't been taught those things, and that would mean she could easily wreak havoc on places. It would also be very, very confusing for her he was sure. He would let her hands go, his air staying around them for the moment. Perhaps he could give her a crash course- he wasn't a Fury so he didn't have as intimate a knowledge of her emotions, but he could at least guide her slightly.
"My name is David. I'm a counselor with Manson....and an Elemental."
He gave her a little smile, trying to be kind. He wasn't a creepy two thousand year old man talking to a little girl out by the lake.
He needed to take her back to the facility, lest people get the wrong idea.

Cora didn't know what to make of this man that just appeared out of thin air, but she carefully did as requested. He must've heard her after all, so maybe he really was here to help her put out the fire? She was watching him with rather wide eyes as it felt like someone was squeezing her hands really hard. But at least it seemed to do the same as the lake was doing so that had to be a good thing, right?
"More hellhound than fury," she corrected. At least, genetically. She didn't really know what she'd grow up to be because she didn't know what she wanted to do with her life. She just knew she didn't want to feel this angry over something so petty. "Auntie is teaching me, but maybe she was right that it's more important to focus on controlling fire before anything else and she can't help with that because she doesn't have hellhound in her." She was kind of angry with her mom in all this too for not preparing her for this at all, but she was hoping they could figure this out soon so she wouldn't keep bursting into flame when she got angry with people. Well, not just angry, furious was more the right term.
"You're not on my list of pre-approved adults," she said a little stubbornly. She didn't recognize the name off of the list Dutch had given her, but maybe that was a good thing? Damian had said the counselors were nice. "But if you can keep this from happening again," she said, holding up her hands for a moment, "You can't be all bad, maybe Dutch just doesn't know you."

He blinked.
"Hellhound? How did it's blood get mixed with yours?"
He didn't think someone actually banged a hellhound and out popped Cora. Maybe some scientific experiment? A melding of two different species like that would be difficult, to say the least. He gave a little smile at her information, the big man going into a crouch. "Controlling anger is also part of it. Yes, controlling the fire will help when your anger gets away from you but if you learn methods to smother the fire inside first, then everything else becomes easier. At least, that's how I understand Furies."
He shrugged.
"I'm new. I haven't met Dutch, though I look forward to doing so, I've heard a lot about her." He cocked a brow.
"She is your aunt?"

Cora frowned slightly at his question. “That’s an excellent question for grandma,” she said simply. “Mom’s half and half. Guessing grandpa was able to assume human form. As far dad... well, mom can shift so...” yeah, ok so she didn’t know anything about her dad other than that he existed. Whether he could shift or not was a mystery to her, but she didn’t really need to know either. She just knew what he was thanks to her mom telling her when she was told what she was herself. She just wanted to make sure she didn’t overreact again and accidentally burned down the youth wing.
Listening to him speak made her frown slightly again. “You think that’s why my mom and aunt are so quick to violence?” She asked, more because she was worried than because she wanted to fight herself. “I’ve only seen her fight once, but my aunt looked almost peaceful in the middle of all the chaos.” It scared her in a way to think that that might be the only way to deal with her anger when it flared up like this. Maybe he had a point though. Learning to redirect the anger was probably best to avoid setting fire to things.
So he was just new and hadn’t met her aunt yet. And he was staff, and a counselor. The fact that his name wasn’t on the list of people to avoid too made her want to accept his help calming down properly. She nodded at the question of Dutch. “Mom’s unavailable, so she came to get me when I was in trouble and brought me here to learn and be safe. Apparently, being a fury means you make enemies.” And at least here she’d be safe from both her aunt’s and her mom’s enemies if they ever found out about her.

He sat down in the grass, falling back with a little grunt and curling a leg up under himself. He listened to her for a moment, letting out a low hum. A hound that was a shifter? He'd never heard of such a thing. But then, he'd only spent a small fraction of his time in hell and hadn't dedicated much of it to the understanding of hellian monsters. He was too busy being tortured. He shrugged, however, at her next bit. "That's what they say. Furies are quick to violence because they're easily angered. Comes with the species." He nodded. "When you age as slowly as they do, and with the type of physicality they have, it's very easy to learn fighting on a level above what normal people are capable of understanding."
He'd only see one human capable of that, and he was on level five. Aaron Hunt. Everyone else seemed only to rely on whatever gift they had. He was an elemental, and a few millenia old, so of course he knew how to throw down. This child was still coming into her skin, and obviously was struggling with what she had inherited. He would run a hand through his hair, thinking to himself as he looked down at her hands. He could feel the supressed flame still trying to come out. Perhaps some counseling and some methods would help.
"Being alive means you make enemies. If you don't have enemies, you're not being true to yourself." He gestured at her hands. "Does it hurt, when they are on fire?"

Cora had never really asked her mother too many questions about what they were. Namely because she hadn’t had all the time in the world to do so. From what she understood though, it wasn’t common for hellhounds to be able to assume human form so her grandfather must’ve been different than regular hellhounds. She would have to ask her aunt about that, she was sure the woman would know more about her grandfather too, not just her grandma.
“What does that say about me?” she asked when he was done talking about how furies were quick to violence. “Monster traits on both sides, does that mean I’m going to have to fight too? To stay calm and prevent bursting into fire?” Cora didn’t want to be a monster, didn’t want to hurt people. She had been promised she would get to be a kid for as long as possible and not have to learn how to fight until she wanted to or became of age.
“Nah, it tickles,” she admitted. “Fire has always tickled. This isn’t really any different.” At least she was pretty fireproof, that was always a good thing when you could burst into flame. “Just more scared that I can’t put it out. Haven’t actually managed to produce any in class yet.” Cora was kind of surprised that she had even managed it now, but she hoped that it meant she would be able to next time they were doing a class on this and not feel like she was wasting everyone’s time. “How do you do that air stuff? Is that your elemental gift?”

He shrugged.
"I don't know. Maybe. But that's sorta something everyone deals with. Maybe not bursting into fire, but learning what it means to be who or what we are. Hound, Fury, Human- they all have qualities that are difficult to deal with. You can't change that. But you can change what it means to you." He leaned forward, and taking her hands again gently, he'd slowly release the air from her hands. He'd still hold those hands, even if they burst into flame again.
"The problem with the fire here....is that yes, it's startling. And can be scary. But until you learn to accept it as part of yourself, it'll just continue to be those things. Once you do though....you can play catch with fire balls or ignite the hair of the class bully." He chuckled. "Okay, maybe not the last one, but you get what I'm saying?"
He would nod.
"Yep. My gift is air. I can make it really hot, or really cold, or even turn into it so nobody can see me. When I was your age, though, it was different. Really hard to control, sometimes I'd accidentally make a twister or catch a room on fire. I had to learn fast, and painfully. But I learned."

It was a little reassuring to learn that this was something everyone had to deal with. Her life had felt kind of out of control since she’d found out she wasn’t human at all. It was kind of difficult to wrap her head around still. Cora hadn’t really noticed when her hands had stopped being on fire, but when he released the air around them, they didn’t start up again and she couldn’t help but grin at the man. “As long as it doesn’t mean I have to be a monster, it doesn’t matter what it means,” she said stubbornly. She was determined not to let what she was turn her into a monster. Even if her views on what was monstrous might change as she got older.
Cora had never been afraid of fire, at least she hadn’t since the first time she hadn’t gotten burned by it, but this was a little different. It was a lot scarier when it came from her. Even if it didn’t hurt. “Probably be a lot easier to do it on purpose now that I know for sure I can though, right?” that seemed to make sense to her. That was good news at least, right? Maybe now that she knew that she could actually do it, rather than having a sense that she could, she figured that maybe now she could start making use of the classes a little more. “Playing catch with fire balls does sound nice,” she agreed, chuckling slightly.
So his gift was air? That was pretty awesome. Listening to him explain how it had been when he was her age made her smile slightly. It made her think that maybe it wasn’t so bad. She could do this. “OK,” she said, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “I think it’s safe to go back inside without starting a fire. Can you tell me more about how you learned to control your powers on the way?”

He laughed.
"That just depends on what you mean by monster. I know lots of them- some of them are the nicest beings I've ever known. Then I've met people....and they're more evil than some monsters could dream." He pointed gently at her sternum. "You....will probably be called a monster a few times in your life. But don't let it get to you- wear it like a badge of honor. Because your moms a monster, I'm a monster....it's time we monsters take that word back, yeah?"
He grinned. He couldn't really tell her just how true his words were- he'd killed so many, created great sky dragons made of thunder clouds and lightning. Leveled cities. Then again, he'd also been in cities under attack, carrying pails of water to put out the fires. He would shrug.
"Maybe. Try it."
He'd watch her, waiting to see if she did. Whether it happened or not, he'd scratch his chin and adjust his glasses to answer her last question. "Practice practice practice. It'll mean greater control, easier activation. Better manipulation. And practicing in a controlled place, where you can't hurt anyone. I'm fine practicing with you, if you want. I'm sure the guards would like you to see a "counselor"-" he made air quotes there. "-anyway."
He'd start back.
"I used to practice with a family, after I'd left home I ran into a group of elementals who controlled water. They taught me a lot of what it meant to be what I am."

Cora was just looking at the man with wide-eyes. She had never even thought about it like that. It hadn’t occurred to her that monster wasn’t exactly a bad term. To humans it certainly was a bad term, but maybe it wasn’t a bad term from a supernatural standpoint. That was certainly something to think about and ask her aunt about next time they had lunch together. “I’d like that,” she said, smiling at him.
She decided to try to make a flame now that she knew she could and had stopped the uncontrolled fire with a little help. Nothing happened for what felt like forever and when something finally did happen, it wasn’t the flames from before. Still, Cora was excited about the minuscule little flame that danced on her hand. It couldn’t be bigger than a small bead, but it was definitely progress. She couldn’t help but be proud of herself for such a small accomplishment. It flickered out after a few seconds, but it was progress.
“I’m signed up for the elemental class, to learn there, but I wouldn’t mind practicing with you too,” she said, smiling at him. Hey, if he could make sure she wouldn’t set fire to anything, it seemed safe to practice with him. Especially if she was expected to see a counselor, it might be good to combine the two. “I’m pretty sure they want me to talk about how I wound up here in the first place. Work through whatever happened to my adoptive parents and all…” Cora honestly didn’t know what had happened to them, but she had a feeling they were dead. While that made her sad, she was determined to focus on what they’d given her instead. A chance to experience being a child in a way her mother and aunt wouldn’t have been able to.
Cora was more than happy to follow David back to the academy. He was absolutely fascinating and she hoped her aunt would like him too. It would make things a lot easier for sure. “So your parents didn’t teach you either?” she asked. Here she’d thought most parents taught their kids and she was just the exception, but if David had learned from others, maybe it was more common than she’d thought.
