It was a warm evening and Xan was out in the car park area around the back of the main building. He had been bent over a motorbike for the best part of an hour, but he wasn't doing anything in particular to it other than cleaning it and making sure everything was working right. It pained him slightly to think that at some point, probably sooner rather than later, he was going to have to give the bike back to the woman who actually owned it. Although he might have taken it without permission the first time, his borrowing of it over the past many months had been granted, but was only meant to be temporary while she was pregnant and unable to ride it. Better than leaving it to rust in a garage or something was the logic.
"Will own you one day." Xan mused to himself, not this bike specifically but any motorbike, a car even... Xan wasn't sure how he was going to do it being that he couldn't exactly go out and get a licence or pop down to the local dealership and make an order, but he just felt that he would, eventually... Even if he had to 'borrow' one again.
Standing up Xan stretched his back and glanced around the garage area and to a few other cars that were parked up. Most were staff owned and he knew better than to touch, he didn't want to actaully do anything to get the privilege of being allowed out to work on mechanical things unsupervised stripped from him.
Reaching to his pocket he pulled out a cigarette and lit it, thinking he earned a small break.

Van hadn't known where the door in front of him would lead him, so far he'd found a computer room, a gymnasium and a pool. And now the car park. The phoenix wasn't stupid enough to think that this was a part of the academy open to residents and students to mess around in, he's also not lost so much of his memory that he's unaware of what a car park is. He did hesitate in the doorway before walking through though, the memory of the burning military truck still flashed to the forefront of his mind whenever he spotted a vehicle. It wasn't pleasant but he had to continue with his life. It's not like he remembers the one he lost.
The door clicked behind him as it closed but he wasn't startled, more boredly aware and his gaze continued to scan over the grounds. Movement caught his attention and as Xan lit his cigarette with that small spark of flame he pretty much guaranteed the ex-soldier's attention.
Van was equipped with two bands around his wrist, one on each one. The tell tale band that everybody has so he can gain access to his own room and other areas (within reason) and the other to monitor his temperature.. Usually he's fine. But the last time he had a meltdown he quite literally sank into the ground a few meters and burnt a church to the ground within hours. He couldn't always control it. But he's not aggressive for the sake of it, it's only when he flips that he loses control. He can get violent, something he's not proud of but none the less he's a threat. So far so good in Manson though, so they've given him the benefit of the doubt. He hopes he doesn't do anything to change that trust in him anytime soon.
"Your bike?" It looked like he'd been doing something too it, and there was little else around right now he could ask the guy about other than the bike standing nearby. At least he wouldn't mind if he smoked.. He pulled his own cigarette out of a packet and tapped a finger to the end that had it burnt down by half a centimeter with just that touch. He needed better control, but it wasn't too bad, "you're not a phoenix." That was more of a statement. He doesn't know how he knows that, just that he does.

Since it was pretty quiet out in the carpark and Xan possessed heighten hearing, the click of a door closing brought his attention away from the grounds and to the main building. He could make out the shape of a man (seemed too big to be a woman) walking over and for a moment the vampire inwardly groaned. Despite this bike borrowing all being perfectly legitimate (now), a couple of times already Xan had been questioned by staff and a guard as to what he was doing out here and had to prove he had been granted permission. The first time he was calm, understanding as he knew how it must seem to an observer, the second time was a bit more annoying, gave the impression someone was not passing a message on to someone else, but a third? Admittedly he was ready to throw a spanner at some heads.
But then he saw bands on the other which indicated this was just a resident. Were they ok to be out here? Xan didn’t really care as long as they didn’t mess around with what he was doing. Blowing out smoke the vampire turned and got ready to see what the dude wanted.
“Nah.” Xan said with a small frown and slight sigh, “Just looking after it for someone.” Residents can be nosey, seemed best to make sure this guy knew he wasn’t stealing it or fucking it up for some staff he had a vendetta against or anything.
Taking another drag Xan would be happy to leave the conversation there but the other spoke again as well as half burn out his own cigarette, and Xan thought he lacked control at times… “A what? No.” he said, sounding a bit puzzled, not that he didn’t know what a phoenix was but simply it seemed like such a random thing to point out. “Why would I be a phoenix?” Was it the fire thing, had he seen that?

"There are worse hobbies to have.." He had nothing else to say to that really. Asking why he was borrowing it, or asking why he didn't have his own was none of his business and he really didn't care about it anyway. It's not like he has a drivers licence to ask to take the thing for a spin. Does he? He can't recall if he can drive or not, he's never been given the chance to see and it's hardly as if he's called up government agencies asking for any legal documents with his name on them. He doesn't even remember the name he had before he woke up in that fire.
This guy seemed friendly enough, he hadn't attacked him verbally or physically so he could relax a little around him. Of course, he hadn't expected to have to fight somebody in a car park. Van was interested in one thing and one thing only and that was the flames that he'd seen come from nowhere. He doesn't know much of anything so if there was somebody else around who could control fire to the extent he can then he wanted to know them. At least be an aquaintance.
Van hadn't meant to burn so much of his cigarette away at once, but flashes of fire aren't something he's well versed with playing with. He has to concentrate hard on just lighting his finger, he could quite easily have just gone up in flames entirely instead, so really, Xan had seen nothing compared to what level of lack of control he could have. At least he was also still stood in his human skin..
"The flame," he gestured halfheartedly to the cigarette that Xan was smoking, "that you lit that with. It came from you? I didn't see a lighter.." And whilst he may not have super human strength or speed he has a hawklike vision, "but you're not what I am. You're something else." Stating the obvious there, he just hoped that this guy didn't take offence to such questioning. He can't see why he would, but there seemed to be some volatile types around here.
"I'm just curious. Other pyrokinetics are less likely to be hurt when I'm around."

There are worse hobbies than fixing up a bike? That was slightly stating the obvious and a former Xan might have pointed that out but the vampire had mellowed slightly since getting a girlfriend, the sarcasm factor was less even if he could still be prone to extreme mood swings. So he just shrugged and continued to enjoy his smoke, the one sin in this place that thankfully did not seem too heavily regulated. What was it going to do to his lunges anyway?
Xan also liked to think he was above being an outright arse to random people, sure he knew he could let things slip but he had always apologised after the fact when he was clearly in the wrong. It was just a symptom, or so he was told, of his overall issues that were keeping him from getting anywhere fast and leaving this place… Not that he really wanted to anymore, he was going nowhere that Cally wasn’t in easy reach of.
So he kept relaxed with this other resident and looked to his fingers as the dude mentioned the flame he had made, lifting his hand and just shrugged slightly before making it again. “Er, yeah. Didn’t think it was that impressive.” he said with a small amused smirk, letting it play there before snapping his fingers to put it out again. “I’m a vampire. Fire thing is a relatively new discovery. Ain’t sure how got it… think was passed on by dude that turned me or something.”
Was this guy a phoenix then? That would not be Xan’s first guess, hell it would not likely be his tenth. He pictured an elegant, feathered firebird and no offence to Van but he didn’t really fit that mental image. Partly as Xan also sort of saw it as a female species.
It was a little unnerving to hear that others with a fire gift were less likely to be hurt around this guy, made it seem like he really couldn’t control his gift and shouldn’t be using it. “So, you a phoenix then? Kinda cool.” He would say he didn’t think they were real but Xan didn’t want to come across as dumb, if vampires are real, why not a phoenix?

There were worst hobbies.. Van had expected to find people who were messed up in more than one way when he'd found out that this place was part asylum. Like dissecting people, or collecting ears or some shit. Some dude doing some work on a motorbike was something he could comprehend as normal, normal was good in a world that seemed hectic from the moment he can remember. But then practically being 'born' in a war zone is bound to be traumatic. And that had only been around a month ago, sometimes he really doesn't know what the hell is going on around him.
Van didn't want to point out that the tiny little flame wasn't particularly impressive, but the fact that he could produce it at all was the thing that he was interested in. So, his ability in general was impressive? Either way, he wasn't going to be sinking this guy's boat anytime soon, not when he looked so amused. Also, that was a nice bit of information to know, that sometimes vampires passed on their own gifts when they made new little baby vampires. Although he never though fire would be something a vamp would be able to control, isn't that one of the few things that can kill the undead?
Must be nice to have a type of immunity to it.
"You're the first fire starter I've come across since coming here," he had been seen too by the medical team but not the dragon, he hadn't been out of control so he'd been safe enough for the head physician to be on standby rather than within the actual room, "it doesn't matter how you got it. Just that you have it and can control it, that matters." He doesn't have to explain to him why it matters. But the phoenix does feel a touch safer around his own element, it only makes sense for him to feel more at ease around people who can control it too.
He scuffed his foot against the floor as he took a drag of his cigarette, the smoke felt good in his throat. He could have smoothly shifted into the avian creature that was as much a part of him as this skin, but Van wasn't asked to prove himself and so the man just stood and smirked a little smile when the vampire mentioned his species being 'kinda cool'.
"I suppose so. But, you're the first vampire I've met," that he knows of, "and that's also quite cool." Kind of. Van isn't so sure he'd like to be drinking down blood, that thought would turn his stomach if he lingered on it too much, "and yes. I can shift, large, flaming bird, colourful plumage, fire hazard. So I'd rather not." A flight wouldn't go amiss though, he hasn't felt the wind in his feathers for at least a week now.

Where his fire gift came from exactly was a bit of a mystery, Xan had asked the staff and other vampires, and it seemed his whole existence was a bit unusual by comparison, it was what made accepting this undead life so difficult for so long and the reason he had so many meltdowns over it and continued to do so. A bit of an oddity in a world of the odd and strange. It was hardly comforting. Now, he could accept the supernatural were real, he could accept he was a vampire simply as denying it was damn harder but how it happened would always give him pause to think, a spike of anxiety, he doubted that would leave any time soon when he had such a clear reminder to what he has lost. Lighting all your own cigarettes was hardly worth losing a leg and the ability to tan.
Xan knew there were a lot of vampires here, he heard there were other pyros too but how common it was he hadn’t bothered to find out. It didn’t sound too farfetched that Van wouldn’t have met others yet, though his seeming enthusiasm over meeting one now felt a tiny bit forced. Old Xan would have probably latched onto that too, asked Van if he was being sarcastic or just easily pleased, but this Xan just smoked and smiled and then sat on the side of ‘his’ bike to continue talking to this other resident.
“Control it might be a push, but thanks.” he said, deciding to take a joke about himself instead, since he hadn’t don much more than little pilot lights he would not claim to have great control over himself, the worry that his body might realise ‘fire hurts and burns’ kicking in was always in his head. So far he did seem fairly immune, feeling the heat to a degree but nothing else. He guessed it was the same thing that allowed him to tolerate low lighting.
Compared to a phoenix Xan was sure his little display was laughable and a part of him was curious to see a demo but he didn’t ask, didn’t want this guy to feel like he had to put on a display for his entertainment and curiosity. “Hu, one of the more common species around here.” Xan said with a shrug, a little surprised he was also the first vampire the dude had met, he couldn’t think Van was getting out much yet. Then the guy said he was a fire hazard so Xan was glad to not have asked to see, all the cars around here and so fuel, things were bound to start exploding. “Wasn’t going to ask anyway, gets kinda annoying being told to put on a display like some trained dog.” Not that Xan had been asked much but just on occasions and it bothered him enough to comment, mostly as he wasn’t fully accepting he could do it yet.
Finishing off his smoke, Xan dropped the end and stomped it out then glanced to the bike again and to Van. “Want a ride?” he asked, the bike could take two. “Can’t go out but spin around the carpark is ok if you’re up for it.”

Van had no idea what Xan had gone through to become what he was, or that he wasn't one of the older of vampires but still fairly new. If he did then he most likely wouldn't ask so many questions but the phoenix wasn't to know and Xan didn't seem to bothered by the questions so he'd most likely continue to ask them. And he wasn't all too enthusiastic about meeting a vampire really.. More returning the compliment of his species being 'cool'. Which, considering they were both fire starters was a little ironic, "I've been here less than a week and the memory is a little fuzzy from.. Well, most of my life." And he certainly wasn't looking for any sympathy, he was just giving a touch of background information.
But to hear this guy didn't have much control either, it was a little disheartening but he tried not too let that show.
However, Van was a little opposite to the vampire when it came to control. When he unleashes his fire he has issues with keeping it limited.. Evident by how he'd burnt away half of his smoke before any had even entered his lungs. But then he is a being with a very close connection to the flames, it's as much a part of him as the skin he walks in. He feels more comfortable walking around engulfed in flame than he does without it but that's not a way you can walk around the world.. Flying through the sky is more than doable though, if anything humans would just think him to be a meteor or some other abnormality of the sky. At the thought Van lifted his gaze to the sky and inhaled the clean air, his eyes flashed briefly amber but returned to normal by the time his gaze returned to Xan.
His smile verged on a smirk and he laughed mirthlessly, "isn't it though? And if you don't do quite what they expect then it's all reprimands. And never any donations, even a cheap pint for a cheap trick would be appreciated." But then Van wouldn't like to feel like a performing trick pony, he's a person as much as anybody else. "Though.. If you ever need to practice, I'm pretty sure I don't burn." Nearly 100% sure he can't anyway. And to be around somebody else practicing pyromancy would probably be quite nice for him. At least reassuring that he's not alone. He doesn't know too much about his own species right now but he's quite sure he's not made to be a solitary creature.
Or maybe that's just who he is as a person.
A ride around the carpark? Van cocked a brow and glanced over to the bike apprehensively but what the hell, why not? "Sure, let's go for it, it's just a normal bike, right? I know there are witches around," he smiled, half joking, "any surprises I'd need to know about?"

Less than a week was no time at all really, Xan kinda felt sorry for Van in that moment as his mind drifted back to his own first days here. Being that it was so many years ago now he guessed the days should not be as clear as they were but like any traumatic event in life, it was sod’s law that is the thing that sticks out to you the most. “Gets easier.” Xan offered with a small shrug, sure it might be an empty platitude really but he hoped Van might be put at ease a little hearing it, there was some truth to it after all. If the memory fuzziness could be altered Xan wasn’t going to comment, wasn’t his business but he figured if anyone can help it was the people here.
After he said it Xan realised his comment might be a bit sarcastic but it seemed Van found it amusing enough, maybe he had been told to show off once too many times as well? Xan grinned back and nodded, he would have appreciated a drink or a smoke in payment too. “Reason why I refuse now. Rather have someone get pissy than have a reputation as easy entertainment. Got some crazy lot here, some wouldn’t stop bugging you.” He doubted that would really happen but it was a good excuse to be lazy, form now on, Cally was the only one he preformed for. Van being a phoenix, Xan could see the dude getting harassed at least from the younger ones here if he let it known too much he could become a firey bird.
The offer to practice with him was met with a slight frown, as much as Xan knew he needed it, he wasn’t sure if he should agree or honestly, if he could be bothered to do it. Putting himself in the staffs viewpoint, that seemed like something he would again get harassed for trying. “Thanks but probably not a great idea. Probably some rule against residents practicing gifts on each other.” Unless he played and Van was just there, coincidently.
Right now Xan just wanted to ride and not think about Manson or bettering himself. He thought Van needed a break too, hence the offer to join him on a spin around the carpark. Reaching around the bike Xan picked up the helmet and held it to the other man to take if he wanted. There was only one and he guessed Van needed it more than him, not that Xan really planned to do anything dumb enough to crash.
At the guys words, Xan laughed, “Was a witch that gave it to me.” he said with a grin, “But like six months ago. If it was gonna start levitating or some shit guess it would have already so, yeah, normal bike.”
“Names Xan, by the way.” he said while starting up the bike, having realising he didn’t know who he was talking to.
