Dev had taken Ezra's advice to heart and had started carrying around a bag with at least one blood bag in just in case she got that hungry again. It was still hard to control herself, even with the blood bags. So she had gotten some food, something people kept telling her she couldn't have, but she had refused to listen. She had brought a cookie and a couple of blood bags with her to the patio to enjoy a "morning" snack. This was still so messed up having days and nights turned around. Sitting down on the patio, she bit into the cookie and hoped it would quell the burning hunger somewhat. She managed to swallow it down, but it didn't take long before she was on all fours at the edge of the patio and heaving to get the last pieces of food out of her system. Well, that was a total waste of a perfectly good cookie. "Jesus christ on a popsicle!" she exclaimed, once she was done heaving. "Shoulda listened to the chef."

The ground was damp beneath his paws, softening the earth as he raced through the forest, his black fur blending with the shadows. The yellow eyed jaguar hadn't run like this in ages. Living in the city for six months had restricted him from doing more than climbing the beams of the gym after lights out. Now he was racing through the forest as fast as he could with no one around to tell him no. The fresh scent of pine filled his nostrils, drawing a rumbly purr from him. Manson was full of different scents, all so confusing and curious, but at this very moment, he just wanted to be free. Free to feel the forest beneath his paws and smell its natural scents. Free to run and be himself.
The jaguar eventually slowed his pace as he made it to the pack grounds. Sniffing around for a bit, he dedicated each scent to memory, so in the case that he ever crossed them, he could say hello without worrying about them being unfriendly. Once he was done, he turned tail and followed his scent back to the lawns. It felt like he was flying. Cato didn't even care that twigs and thorns were tearing at his fur or scratching him across his nose and ears. He came sliding to a stop on the grassy lawns. The panther plopped down and rolled onto his side, stretching out under the moonlight. This was much better. The feeling of anxiety that had been hovering over him for the past week faded with the adrenaline rush. He had definitely needed that.
Once he was done acting like a big kitten, he headed for the patio, his tail swishing behind him. Cato had clothes stashed in the flowerbed. He'd been told that having clothes nearby would be appropiate if he planned to shift. He nosed his way through the flowers, his muscles rippling beneath his fur. It almost looked as if he were stalking prey. He was not. He'd heard someone on the patio and was trying not to scare them. He paused as a female voice broke the silence. He raised his head just a bit. He was 99.9% sure that Jesus had been on a cross, not a popsicle, but who was he to correct her? He shook his head and went on to find his clothes. Shifting, he dressed himself in a pair of black and red basketball shorts and plain tennis shoes. Now that he was decent, he figured he should check on the vomiting girl.
"Are you okay," he asked, slipping his hoodie on over his bare chest as he popped up from the flower bed. It hadn't occurred to him that he might just scare the poor girl. In his head, popping up out of the flower bed as a human didn't compare to being spotted as a jaguar.

Dev wasn’t entirely sure what she was hearing exactly. It sounded like big paws hitting the ground running, and if she hadn’t been too busy getting all of the cookie out of her system, she might have gone to investigate. Especially once it became clear that he was getting closer. But since she couldn’t run to investigate while also being sick, she remained where she was and startled a little when someone spoke to her. She hadn’t heard anyone else approaching. Heartbeats were still very much distracting to her and her senses tended to focus on the one closest to her at any given moment. Remembering what Ezra had said about people here biting back, she wiped the her mouth and pulled out a blood bag from her bag and figured it might distract her a little at least. “No,” she replied a little sullenly. “I miss food.” With that, she tried to not make as big of a mess out of opening the blood bag as she had the first time she’d eaten one. She couldn’t really keep herself from devouring the contents this time either, but at least she wasn’t making quite as much of a mess. “Can vampires still drink?” she wondered aloud. “You smell, what are you?” she asked, reverting back to what she usually did when she was feeling insecure about something and trying to push people away rather than be nice to them.

His heart rate was elevated, but that had been due to the run he'd just finished. Cato didn't exactly see this girl as a threat. Her miserable appearance kind of threw that idea out of the window. The jaguar shifter leaned against the patio, crossing his arms under him, his blue eyes holding unfiltered curiosity as Devyn complained of missing food. The smell of blood nearly made him recoil, but it wasn't worse than the smell of death that she was giving off. To think she'd had to nerve to say he smelled. His eyes cut to the vomit she'd expelled only moments before. "Won't do you any good to throw it up," he pointed out. His nose wrinkled a bit as the contents of the bag started to disappear. Cato typically ate ham sandwiches as his main diet, unless someone offered him something else, and if they did he preferred it uncooked, but that was just the shifter part of him. Meat and blood were two completely different things. He found it all a bit repulsive.
"Isn't the answer obvious when you're drinking down the blood," he asked, his tone holding the exact amount of confusion that his face held. She was a vampire. That explained the blood. Not that it made it any less gross. "A man," he answered without missing a beat. There wasn't an ounce of sarcasm in there. He'd just answered the question at face value. It hadn't occurred to him that she'd meant his species. Was he going to ask her what she was? No, because she looked like a woman to him. In his head, he'd thought her question was a bit ridiculous, but maybe she was blind. He'd give her the benefit of the doubt. He was blind in one eye, so why couldn't she be blind in both? He yawned lightly, pulling his hoodie over his head as a gust of wind blew through. Thankfully it was blowing the scent of vomit and death away from him.

A snort escaped her at his words. “Not like it was intentional,” she said. If she’d had her way, she would’ve kept the food down and it would’ve tasted amazing. As it was, it hadn’t really tasted of anything and her body just didn’t accept it at all. The blood bag wasn’t much of a comfort right now, but it made it possible to avoid trying to nibble the guy just to satisfy that hunger. Even made it possible to ignore his heartbeat for the time being. She didn’t want to end up being bitten in return after all. “I meant actual drinks,” she replied, finding his question a bit weird really. Of course she knew she could drink blood, it was what she needed to survive right now, but she was wondering about something that wouldn’t just quell the hunger but calm her nerves too. Struggling to get her hands on tainted blood, being forced to sober up just made her more hungry all the time and she figured that was probably because she had nothing to distract her from it all. “You’re not just a man though,” she pointed out. She couldn’t quite put her finger on what he was, he smelled somewhat exotic. Getting up from where she was sitting, Dev moved over to one of the benches instead. It seemed best to get away from the mess she’d made earlier. Even if she hadn’t really believed she would would get sick even if she’d been told she couldn’t have regular food anymore. “This place is so weird.” Then again, she was so new to this world so everything was still a little weird.

He figured it wasn't intentional, but Cato didn't exactly put two and two together. He hadn't realized that being a vampire meant you couldn't eat normal food. He'd just assumed that either the cookie she'd eaten was bad, or that her stomach hadn't agreed with her food intake. He'd seen it happen before. When Maddison had been pregnant with Luther, she'd thrown up almost every other meal. And there had also been that one time where Elizabeth had eaten bad potatoes and thrown up from food poisoning. Now that he knew Dev was a vampire, he doubted she was pregnant. Not when she smelled so heavily of death. Maybe she just had a stomach ache. "Hmm, feel better soon," was all he said. It seemed like the appropriate thing to say to someone who was sick.
If the newly made vampire had attacked Cato, he would have been very put off. Aside from that, he would have clawed her face off. The jaguar was not food, nor would he accept being treated as much. As sweet as he was, Cato was still a jaguar, and he'd defend himself to the death. "Alcohol," he stated. "I'm not sure that's going to solve your food problem." Cato had never drunk alcohol before. He'd been offered on many occasions, but he'd always declined. It didn't smell right and made all of the other boxers act funny. Drunk had been the term they'd used. He didn't trust himself not to shift while intoxicated.
"No, I'm not. I'm also a jaguar," he answered after she'd claimed him to be more than just an ordinary man. His gaze followed her as she moved to one of the benches. Cato lifted himself over the side of the patio with ease, sitting on the railing, feet resting on one of the benches. "Because of all the strange smells," he asked in regards to her statement of Manson being weird. Cato didn't mind being here in the least. He was learning quite a bit, plus he got to run and stretch his legs.

Dev snorted slightly at the sentiment. Sure, it was probably just well-meaning, but it sounded so weird to her. "I'm literally immune to catching an illness, comes with being dead and all," she said, frowning slightly. "But thanks, I suppose," she added more as an afterthought. "As long as I don't eat food again, I should be fine." It made her sad more than anything that she could never eat food again. It made her wonder about other things whether they'd even be possible. "It might solve my feeling problem," she countered, feeling like that was a perfectly solid reason to wonder about alcohol. "Clearly, some liquids aren't a problem, so maybe others won't be either." It seemed like a solid enough logical leap to her right now. She didn't know how this all worked after all. Hopefully, she would figure it out without too many more episodes like that one or without tracking down Ezra and bother the crap out of him to get answers. "Wait, that's a thing?" she asked, staring at him for a moment once she was sitting down. People could be animals too? What else did they have around this place? "Because of all the people who aren't people," she answered him. "Well, aren't just people anyhow. I feel like I just got my Hogwarts letter over a decade too late." Ok, yeah, so she'd been a fan of the books growing up and secretly hoping it was all real, but she had grown out of such childish beliefs, only to be thrust back into it and have it all be real after all. It was a bit of a wild ride, and if it weren't for the fact that she'd just drank a blood bag and actually enjoyed the taste she wouldn't have believed any of this.

Those clearly hadn't been the right words. Or so he'd assumed from the snort, frown, and words that followed. Cato didn't know what else he could say to her. If she was a vampire who was immune to all illness, then telling her get well was irrelevant. If he was talking about her unsatisfaction with being a vampire, he doubted he'd get much more of a response. It made him slightly uncomfortable to know there was nothing he could say or do to help ease her misery. She was clearly miserable in his eyes. The jaguar was the type of man to lend a helping hand whenever asked, so this was kind of new to him. He'd run into a problem he couldn't solve or mend. His gaze briefly cut to the vomit when she spoke of eating.
He supposed he could understand her wanting to drown out her problems with alcohol. That's what the guys back home used to do if they lost a match. "Hope it works," he commented lightly. He didn't think it would, but he didn't want to ruin her hope. Would her drinking alcohol end up with vomit on the floor again? He silently hoped that she wasn't stashing a bottle somewhere on her person. He couldn't deal with another round of 'things that make you wrinkle your nose.'
Had he not just stated that he was a jaguar? Why was she asking him if it was a thing? He figured he might as well show her instead of explaining it. He'd been told he could be himself around here, Jaguar included. "It is a thing," he confirmed, pulling his hoodie off and resting it on the railing. He smiled when she started on about how people weren't people and how she felt like she'd come to Hogwarts. "That's a good movie," he commented as he dropped over the side of the rail, back into the flowers. "It does seem a bit magical here." He glanced over his shoulder at her as he slipped off his shoes. "Are you new too? You sound new." He shifted, leaving his clothes in the flowers. Shaking out his fur, the jaguar leaped back up onto the railing with ease and dropped down onto the patio, a few paces back from Dev.

Dev was frustrated, though not with Cato himself. It had more to do with this whole situation really. She had a feeling there was nothing anyone could do to cure her of what really ailed her and she honestly couldn't see how things would get any better. Talking to her family at night wasn't really raising any eyebrows with the time difference and all, but she couldn't really go see them again. Couldn't actually be around them or have one of her own. Not that she'd really thought about having kids just yet, but she would've liked to have had the option at the very least. Even if she'd wound up choosing not to, it would've been her decision and not something forced upon her. "Used to work for a while at least," she said, giving him a slight smile. "Until I sobered up again. Guess the bar here would know whether I can safely drink or not without getting sick again. Somehow it was even worse now than when I was alive." Sure, when she'd caught a stomach bug and had vomited on an empty stomach, it had come close, but it really had felt like her body was trying to turn itself inside out just to get the food out of her system. She had no interest in trying food again after that experience, no matter how much she might miss it. Dev was a little surprised when he started undressing, but she focused on what he was saying instead. "New to this whole world," she admitted. "Was just regular old human until a couple of weeks ago." It was frustrating how little she really knew about the world when she'd grown up and studied to learn quite a lot about what she'd thought was the real world. While she was surprised when he was suddenly a jaguar like that, gaping slightly at the sight, it didn't take her long to walk over to him and just hug him gently. Somehow, it was easier to avoid the temptation of his heartbeat when he was a big cat than when he was a man and he was so soft! "You're beautiful," she commented, smiling slightly as she stepped away from him again. It seemed weird to just be hugging the cat or petting him when she knew he was also a man, no matter how much she just wanted to bury her face in his fur right now.

Lots of people said alcohol did wonders for them. He wouldn't know anything about that. His blue eyes studied her for a moment as she spoke of becoming sober. That meant she'd stopped, so why was she intent of finding a drink now? It was a bit confusing, but he didn't voice as much, lest he offend her. "Probably. There's a lot of different people here with different needs. No harm in seeing if they can help you as well."
He probably should have given her some forewarning. If she'd have pointed it out, he would have made a mental note for the next time. Some of the simpler stuff went over his head, like now. The jaguar sat back on his haunches, ears flicking lightly as he waited for her to react. It was similar to the way the family had acted the first time he'd shifted to a human right before their eyes. There'd been a few gasps and screams, and maybe even a threat of calling the police, but it had all worked out in the end. The hug she delivered left him purring, a deep rumbling in his chest. He was always happy to be hugged or petted. It made him absolutely happy. Almost as much as having his ears scratched. Cato couldn't help but rub his cheek against her before she backed off. For him, there was nothing strange about it. He'd been born like this, raised like this, and lived his life like this until recently.
He walked in a large circle and then leaped back over the edge of the patio to where his clothes were. It was time to get dressed. He'd only shifted for show, but he imagined it wouldn't be long until he was bed, curled up in a tight ball with his tail resting over his nose. As he dressed, he spoke. "It's a big world, even bigger when you don't understand it." He was speaking from personal experience. He pulled his hoodie off the railing. "I was just a regular old jaguar until about six months ago," he offered. "Maybe we can figure it out together?" He could use some friends around this place.

Dev honestly didn’t know whether alcohol would do anything for her now compared to before, but she figured it was worth investigating whether she could safely drink it or not. At the very least, it was cheaper and more accessible than drugs and if it helped with the cravings in a similar manner, it might be worth trading one vice for another for a while. “Considering I was technically orphaned here, I don’t really have that much choice but to hope they can help me adjust to perpetual night,” she said, smiling slightly at him. She was still processing all this, but she was doing the best she could. She was delighted when he purred and happily scratched him for a moment before remembering he was a person too. It was a little weird to be scratching a big cat that was also a person when she thought about it too much. Didn’t change the fact that it was amazing that he could do that though. Much cooler than drinking blood, that was for sure. “It was a bit of a shock for sure, but I imagine suddenly living as a human must be weird too.” She didn’t know what he was going through, but it sounded like quite the adjustment as well. At least there was someone in here that seemed to be just as new to things as she was. Well, almost as new to it at least. “I might not be the best teacher on how to behave as a human, apparently I’m a bit of an entitled bitch, but human activities I can help with,” she said, smiling slightly at him. “Help not wanting to chow down on everyone would be nice, short of that, maybe a guide to all this?”

Cato knew that word all too well, but he rarely applied it to himself. Something had happened to his birth parents and siblings, but the memory was a mere shadow in the back of his mind. Florence and her children and their children's children had made sure he'd never felt alone or abandoned. So no, he didn't consider himself an orphan in the least. The blue eyed male could only imagine the shock of spending ones entire life walking in the daylight only to be forced into a life of permanent darkness, never to see or feel the warmth of the sun again. It made him mildly uncomfortable just thinking about it. "What do you plan on doing once everything is sorted out?"
Cato nodded and walked around towards the stairs instead of hoping over the railing again. He was conditioning himself to do normal things bit by bit. "I'm figuring it out as I go. I've lived with humans my entire life, so I understand the basics. It's the interactions that I haven't quite mastered just yet. I have to remember things that humans shouldn't and couldn't do versus what I'm capable of because I am a shifter." He gave a wry smile. "I miss being a pet, it was simpler."
He sat down on one of the benches, legs crisscrossed. "That last time I heard someone call another that it was not in a friendly manner." He tilted his head. "It resulted in a screaming match, so I'm only going to assume it's an insult and you're fairly nice so far." He gave a shrug. "But I'll take whatever help I can get." Cato's expression was nothing short of surprise. She had issues with controlling herself? He didn't have that problem. He didn't eat people. "Do you have to have human blood? Can it be something else? Like a deer? Or chicken?" He was just trying to get a feel for the situation.

Before she’d died, she had had a family, a support system. Now? Well, she supposed she technically still had her family, she just couldn’t go see them. But she had been orphaned in the sense that she had been turned and dropped off rather than stay with her sire as it seemed like most newborn vampires did for a while. “I don’t know,” she replied honestly. “Figure out how to use what I went to school for in my new life I suppose. Would kind of go to waste otherwise.” She might have forever to figure shit out, but that didn’t mean she wanted to waste time for too long. Listening to him talk made her smile slightly. It must be strange to have lived your whole life as an animal, understanding what was going on around you but never quite figuring out how to apply it to yourself. “Maybe you need a… a were creature?” she asked, not quite comfortable with the terminology just yet. “Someone who wasn’t born I mean, and turned recently. Could be mutually beneficial.” Of course, she couldn’t say for sure, but she imagined if she’d been turned into an animal, she would’ve been more than willing to trade learning human skills and limitations for animal ones. “Being a pet does sound a lot simpler, not that I’d know from experience, just seems easier. But you’d be missing out on books and video games, dancing… all sorts of useless crap us people like to do to pass time.” Herself, well, out of those she preferred books or dancing. Dev nodded at what he said about it usually being an insult. “To quote my favorite fictional character. ‘Never forget what you are, the rest of the world will not. Wear it like armor, and it can never be used to hurt you.’” Biting her lip for a moment, she forgot she’d just been eating and nicked herself, causing her to hiss slightly before she licked her lip and looked at Cato where he was sitting. “If I call myself one, doesn’t hurt nearly as much when others do. Think you just caught me on a good day though. I don’t make friends easily.” Dev wasn’t going to be upset if Cato turned around and decided she wasn’t friend material after meeting her on a bad day, she couldn’t help her heightened emotions these days. “Blood bags work,” she reassured him. “As long as nobody’s actively bleeding. It’s just kind of hard to focus around people when half the time all my brain can focus on is that drumbeat in their chest. I’ve been told the constant hunger will stop eventually, but right now I wake up every night feeling like I haven’t eaten in at least a week.” It was a nightmare. Dev had always had very strict routines about food times simply because she got cranky when she didn’t eat regularly and now she was almost always hungry and cranky as a result. Maybe that was why she wasn’t biting Cato’s head off though, she had literally just eaten.
