I Think You Can Save Me
Cairo had needed to get away for a little bit. Coming out here to the beach was just the first step in a series of theraputic steps that would help keep him from sinking into depression after the stunt that Kiba had pulled. It had been hard on him, because telling Kiba the adoption was off felt like giving up on the wolf pup, and that wasn't true at all. The last year had had it's ups and downs. He'd thought he and Kiba had been making progress, but the pup had gone and run away again. That alone was a slap in the face. What crushed him was finding out that the pup had gone to the same spot where they'd both nearly been killed. He just couldn't take it anymore. He was grateful to have Bjørn for support along the way, but he didn't want to burden his boyfriend with his grief, so he'd taken off for the beach to clear his head for a few days. Afterwards he would be flying out of the country for two weeks. The brown haired male was in desperate need of a vacation.
Deep down he felt like he was just running away from his problems again, but he knew himself better than anyone else. If he stayed, he'd probably do something regrettable. He had known it was time to take a haitus when he'd started having difficulties shutting people out. Usually he was pretty good about keeping up that metaphysical wall to prevent every little thing from triggering his clairvoyance, but the past few weeks had been a rollercoaster of hell. Just touching a door knob was sending him on a fieldtrip into the past, present, and future. He'd muscled through it, but it wasn't just the doorknob, it was passing by people, strong emotions, the exchange of papers. It was leaving him a wreck. He'd even had to get a higher dosage on his antidepressents to keep from completely spiraling out of control.
Out here on the beach with the private cabin rented out though, there was nothing but silent. No people. Just silence. Like now, he could relax a bit, feet partially buried in the sand, the sounds of waves lapping against the short, and the sun beginning to set on the horizon. This was exactly what he needed to get his mind off of it all.

Thanks to a little help from Kaia’s friend, Ida had finally talked to the witch on the admin staff and she had made her a neat little bracelet she could wear and swim around the ocean without being noticed by the humans or their technology. It allowed her to spend more time outside of Manson and just swim and collect things. Of course, she had still needed a ride to the beach, but today she had taken a taxi and simply asked that one return for her in a five hours before paying for her fare. Having stuck her phone in a sealable plastic bag, Ida sealed it up once she reached the beach and placed it in her bag. It was one she had bought specifically to help her carry the stuff she collected, so at least it could handle the water, even if it might get a bit heavier once she was out there. Finding a nice cliff where the water looked deep enough, she dove right in and spent a few hours collecting shells and random coins and shiny things people had lost in the water, as well as grabbing a fish for herself to snack on while she placed another little thing in her bag and returned to the beach. Once she got back to the beach, Ida was oblivious to the fact that she wasn’t alone. She was still mostly in the water because she’d missed the feeling of salt water on her tail. The remnants of the fish in one hand, she emptied out her bag on the sand and pushed her phone to one side before she focused on sifting through her collection for the day. A nice watch, some beautiful shells she was sure Kaia would love and various other shiny objects that had caught her attention at the deep.

I Think You Can Save Me
Some places could be so bittersweet. He could sit out here for hours and be content, but how could he not think about the countless hours he and Slade had spent out on this beach when they'd both been residents. It brought an almost sad smile to his face. He recalled all too clear how the two of them would sit back and watch Kaiser race up and down the beach, barking at the water as if he were so much bigger than the ocean and its waves. They'd talked about how they'd eventually adopt and bring their kids here to this same beach. It would have been Sinh had things not gone so horribly wrong in the blink of an eye. Cairo clutched the rings on the chain he wore around his neck. "I miss you," he whispered. "But I've been doing better. A lot better." He knew it was probably ridiculous talking out loud like this, but he wanted to get this much off his chest. "Bjørn has been really good to me. I didn't think I'd be able to move on after you passed away. It took a lot of time, and it's still a bit difficult at times, but he makes me happy. I can smile again without having to force it." He looked down at the golden bands in his hand. "But I guess it's getting tough again if I'm being honest. I wanted to adopt Kiba, but I just couldn't go through with it. He won't stop running away and it tears me to pieces. We were doing so well and then it was as if he threw all that work out the window without a second thought. I don't think I'm good enough to be a parent. It makes me wonder how Sinh would have turned out."
It wasn't the first time he'd come out here and talked to the open air. He used to come here a lot. It was sort of his safe space. Slade had never shown up as some kind of Guardian Angel, but it still comforted Cairo to come talk to him when things felt like they were falling apart. Like now. He didn't think himself worthy of any of the good things that had happened in his life, and now he was expecting it all to fall apart, not just the Kiba situation, but with Bjørn and all of their friends. He was beginning to think none of it was solid. "Daisy and Lyss are having a baby. Daisy is one protective mother. It suits her. And Lyss is going to make a great dad. I'm secretly jealous of them." He gave a small chuckle. "I'm pretty excited for the reveal though. It'll give me an idea of what I should build, but until then I've just been shopping for little things, like bottles and pacifiers, and clothes." The brown haired male looked across the water. "I had Cecil send those boxes that were packed away. They should get here within the next week or so. I thought it best to open one box every month. I'm finally ready to experience those memories."
Cairo continued on talking about everything that had been happening, the good and the bad. He kind of wished he would get an answer back, but the silence was still good. It took him a moment to realize that someone else was on the beach. He hadn't noticed her get into the water, but he sure had noticed her dumping her treasures on the shore. "Been snorkeling," he asked, calling out to her. She looked oddly familiar, but he just couldn't place her face.

If she had been aware of the fact that somebody else was nearby, Ida probably could have listened in on what he was saying, but she wasn’t actively trying to listen and was more focused on her treasures right now anyway. It seemed like she had gotten a few things Kaia would like at least, once she got them rinsed out so they wouldn’t bring salt to her lake. Ida looked up when she was asked a question. “In a manner of speaking,” she replied, smiling slightly at the man. She didn’t know exactly what he saw right now though as she wasn’t entirely sure how the bracelet worked. She splashed the surface of the water with the end of her fin out of curiosity more than anything else. Whether he saw it for what it was or those things humans put on their feet to mimic a fin was a different matter. She would just have to wait and see. Either way, there was a reason why she hadn’t moved herself entirely onto dry land, she rather enjoyed spending a little time in her true form in her natural habitat. “Want to see if anything’s to your liking?” she asked, figuring she should at least offer. It might help cheer him up a little. “I’m helping a friend decorate a lake house of sorts, figured maybe there’d be some good stuff forgotten about.” Well, the lake was sort of their house so it worked out. Unless of course this guy was from Manson, then she could tell the truth, but it seemed best to be a little bit careful right now.

I Think You Can Save Me
The brown haired male stood up, grabbing the towel that had been next to him and wrapping it across his shoulders to cover the scars that decorated his left side. People tended to stare, and he was feeling vunerable enough as it was. In the privacy of his own home, or while with his boyfriend he felt comfortable, but not in public. Never in public. Silly him for assuming no one would be on the beach.
He approached with his general sense of caution. Cairo was friendly, usually happy go lucky, and very upbeat, but right now he was a mix of bittersweet feelings and memories. The closer he got, the greater the caution. Something wasn't quite right about this situation. He wouldn't say that this woman was dangerous, but looking at her up close was like looking through distorted glass. He half wanted to reach his hand out to see if there was something in front of him. He didn't know that it was magic, let alone Daisy's. He decided to brush it off as being a bit exhausted from all of the overwhelming emotions. God forbid he entertain the thought that he was hallucinating. The last thing he wanted was to think he was going crazy and land himself in the looney bin.
He looked down at the items. Shells and little trinkets of the sort. "These are nice," he commented. He gave a polite smile at the comment of her helping her friend decorate. "That's nice of you. Are you two close?" Lake houses were always nice. He'd never seen one that wasn't appealing to the eye. Cairo liked decorating and things of the sort. Anything to keep him busy really. He was into woodwork for the most part, but home decor could have been a hobby if he'd ever thought about it on a serious level. "This is the perfect place to get the proper material without making an actual purchase. Seems a lot more personal." He pointed at a seashell. "Do you mind?" He wanted to examine it a bit closer.

When the man was close enough to look at her items, Ida recognized him from Manson. He was one of the teachers and technically a class she was meant to attend too. “Like sisters,” she said, smiling slight at him. “I imagine you must know Kaia?” It seemed most staff she had spoken to did anyway. “I’d take this off to make things a little easier, but I’m afraid I’d be unable to get it back on myself,” she said, holding up her arm with a delicate little bracelet for him to see. It had been hard enough finding something that felt comfortable against her scaly-skin, another thing entirely to find something she’d be able to take on and off without drying off and shifting first. She’d been reassured that should it break, she just had to hold onto it until making it to dry land and it would still work. “Go ahead,” she said, finding something that looked like it had fallen off a charms bracelet to study for a moment while he looked at the shell. “I consider myself a bit of a pearl diver at times, but it’s nice to find pretty things people have lost in addition to shells to store things in.” Ida was always amazed at the things people lost at sea, even if she was a bit disgusted at times at all the trash that could be found too. “I try to come here as often as possible, or whenever I can get a ride.” Ida had yet to learn how to drive herself, so she was still dependent on others or a taxi to get herself where she wanted to go.

I Think You Can Save Me
The mention of Kaia made him take a second glance at the woman in the water. She still looked distorted, but if he focused hard enough he could make out her proper features. It helped to know that he wasn't losing his mind. That someone had provided her with a bracelet to hide herself. He smiled as he began to recognize her face. "Hello Ms. Radcliffe." Cairo prided himself on knowing every student in his class. "I do know Kaia, she's very sweet." The nymph was absolutely wonderful to be around. Her air of positivity was welcomed at all times. He didn't spend much time around the lake, but he always felt at ease when he did cross by.
Her using the bracelet didn't bother him at all. If it meant she could be out in the water without hiding, then he was all for it. Cairo wasn't in the business of forcing people into a reclusive life due to their abilities. In fact, his job was to help them integrate into the real world.
He picked up the shell and examined it. "Reminds me of cotton candy," he said offhandedly. He rolled it in his hand, looking up as Ida explained that she dove for pearls. "You could start a business," Cairo spoke with a small smile. He was always up for encouraging people. He would have offered her a ride to the beach whenever he had time, but he tried to limit himself when it came to residents. For instance, if someone worked off campus, he would happily volunteer to get them there. It was all part of the integration system after all. Treasure hunting in the ocean seemed like more of a leisure thing. "Do you have a counselor to discuss better arrangements with?"

Ida smiled when he both said her name like that and mentioned knowing Kaia. She was a precious gem and she knew she wouldn’t have felt nearly as comfortable at Manson without her. She just made everything a little brighter, no matter what else was going on. “She might not be the best teacher about how to fit into the modern world, but she sure is great company and a good reason for not being in a hurry,” she said, chuckling slightly. In many ways, Ida dreaded the day she would have to say goodbye to Kaia. She knew she would have to leave eventually, she needed to live somewhere closer to the ocean long term, but she wasn’t in any hurry to get there. The thought of starting a business had never really occurred to her. She was currently set on learning how to use her abilities to help others, but that was definitely something to think about. “Shame it can’t be guided diving tours or swimming lessons,” she said, amused by the thought more than anything. “I’m afraid I’m a bit of a hoarder. What isn’t being brought to Manson is being shipping to my meat supplier. Guy deserves a little something for his efforts after all.” Ida hadn’t gotten the memo about there being a wendigo on the grounds as well that needed human flesh, but so far she hadn’t had any issues getting resupplied when she needed to. “Not one that’s mine specifically, but I do have one that’s helping me with my studies,” she said, smiling slightly. She knew Lyss was a counselor and a good man, but he was more a fishing budding and a friend than someone she thought wanted to hear all about her longing for the water. “I help some of the staff fish at times though. Apparently big cats like fresh fish. I usually get a ride both ways in exchange. With the lake on the grounds, it’s not a necessity to visit the ocean every so often.” Ida knew that if she actually had a medical need to visit the ocean, she would get lifts whenever, but as it was it was more of a pleasure thing than necessity. “How do people lose so many things in the water?” she asked, holding up what looked like a wedding ring.

I Think You Can Save Me
Kaia was a bit too precious for this world. Her personality shone like the brightest star. It would be a shame if someone doused that light. They needed more people like Kaia in this world, especially here at Manson. One act of kindness went a long way. Sure, he had his opinions on the violent and killers, but maybe they'd been one smile or hug or a kind word from being a completely different person. Could people be born evil? He'd seen demons with kinder souls than some humans he met. "What better way to learn the world than with a friend. Two heads are certainly better than one."
He laid the shell back down, his brown eyes warm as she spoke of not being able to do guided tours or teach swimming. "You're thinking inside the box. There are plenty of people like us that need help with swimming or would like a guided tour. To see another with extraordinary abilities would help make that transition easier if they haven't done so already." He gave a sheepish smile. "Excuse my optimism." He knew everything was picture perfect or clear cut, but sometimes you had to make the best of things and go from there. How could you ever began anything if you didn't have some form of destination to end at?
The teacher gave a small chuckle as Ida called herself a hoarder. Acceptance was the first step to fixing the problem, or so his therapist had told him on multiple occasions. Cairo had been too polite to tell the woman to shove it. Unless someone was specifically referred to him, Cairo didn't have access to files, so Ida needing a specific kind of meat was beyond his knowledge. Probably a good thing. The man tended to scare quite easily. "That sounds like a fair trade," he commented after a while. No one liked to work for free.
Cairo nodded as she explained her arrangements. He'd think she was referring to Daisy if he knew about her and Lyss being acquainted. He couldn't think of many cat shifters around Manson aside from Daisy and that one boy who Cairo rarely saw. He was the one that had attacked Daisy after all. The Norwegian male shuddered at the thought. He could have been in the same position. "It seems like you've got the negotiations part all down," he joked. His gaze shifted to the ring she held. It looked...like a wedding ring. He actually reached for the rings that were secured on a chain around his neck. Still there. He'd be devastated if he ever lost them. "Careless, clumsy, lost in the moment of a good time. Rings are materialistic, they can be replaced, but a lifetime of memories can never be erased."

In many ways, Ida was glad Kaia was who she was. Not only because she kept an opening in the ice that formed during winter, but also because it had been forever since she’d had a sister like her. Sure, she probably had actual sisters out there, but none of them had been as kind to her as Kaia was. Besides, it sure beat living in the lake alone. “Probably doesn’t hurt that she’s helping me be better simply by being so kind,” she admitted. “Mind you, I was never violent for the sake of it, but I used to be a lot more impatient and quick to anger when things didn’t work out.” Ida had really only been violent in defense of herself or a loved one or when she still had to drown her own food. Thinking inside the box? Well, she was old, it took a while for her to realize new concepts. “If you can think of someone who could benefit from either, feel free to send them my way,” she said, chuckling slightly. “Optimism is never a bad thing. And I do have plenty of free time on my hands.” She wouldn’t mind helping out with something like that if anyone wanted her help with water. Well, swimming. Kaia was better suited to help someone with water powers. “He seems to appreciate it,” she said, smiling slightly at the thought. Yeah, the man was weighing all the organs anyway, so it wasn’t really that much work for him to put it on ice and get it to her when he wasn’t too far away to begin with, but she felt like it was only fair to trade him a few of the oddities she found in return. Because yeah, nobody should work for free. And even if he didn’t need the money, he should get compensated in other ways. “Well, you don’t get past the first century without learning to negotiate,” she joked back. “Of course, that was centuries ago, so would be weird if I hadn’t learned something at least.” She’d returned to studying her findings shortly after and was genuinely curious how someone could lose what looked like a wedding ring in the water. “You’d think it was hard to lose something that’s usually attached to your fingers.”

I Think You Can Save Me
Cairo liked to see the kindness in most people despite his skittish personality. A lot of things scared him, but he was usually happy go lucky. He knew that a lot of the residents he worked with were trouble in some way or another and that a majority of them were trying to piece everything together and rebuild their lives. He'd been there, and if he were being completely honest with himself, he was still working on it. Rome wasn't built in a day after all. He couldn't quite say when things had fallen apart, but he knew when the world had suddenly ended. That's when the real road to recovery had begun. Friends and family had definitely made it a lot easier. Kindness was a blessing. He offered up a small smile. "Kindness goes a long way," he told her. "It tends to rub off on some people." He couldn't say all, but definitely some. He was genuinely happy to hear that Ida fell in the group that responded well to it.
Cairo thought for a moment. "Well, if you like children, I believe a majority of them like to play around the lake. I'm not sure if they can swim or not, so a lesson would be beneficial in case you or Kaia aren't around." He leaned back some. He knew that Miss Delacroix taught flight classes, so it could all be arranged. The residents needed more activities to keep them occupied. He mentally scrolled the lists of students in his class. It wasn't his job to know what their gifts were and what they needed to be trained on, but he sort of made it part of his rapport building process. Right now he was teaching a young man how to build metaphysical walls so that he could focus on his own emotions, and not everyone else's. Cairo was willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Yes, he taught Life Skills, but he was always open to doing so much more.
He gave a small nod as she spoke of her supplier being appreciative. He hadn't realized that she was older than a century. Immortality really did amaze him. She looked fairly young. What enabled them to stop aging at a certain point? Was it simply the way things were or was that the age in which they were at their prime? He knew some immortals could manipulate their age range. Was Ida the same? "Negotiation was far more relevant a century ago with bartering and trading." He gave a small shrug. He liked history. Cairo couldn't argue with that fact. Rings usually were attached to fingers. He used to wear his, but then Slade had died and he just couldn't bear it, so he'd chained them both on his necklace. "The world is full of mystery," he mused.

There was a time she wouldn’t have been so easily swayed by kindness, but every day living with Kaia she was honestly glad she had slept as long as she had. She liked enjoying her kindness without finding it annoying or infuriating as she might’ve done when she was just tired of the world. Ida had never been suicidal, she just hadn’t had anything she enjoyed about life anymore. Wanting a little break wasn’t the same as wanting it all to end, not in her mind at least. “Kindness also gets you further in life,” she said, chuckling slightly. “I was kind of a spiteful bitch before taking my long nap. I was tired of being treated as a prized possession that could be traded, so I mean, it wasn’t entirely unjustified.” Ida had really only stuck around because she’d had nowhere else to go for a while and the vampires that had traded her around like that had always seemed to have fresh meat for her to devour. “I’ll set something up in the pool,” she agreed, amazed she hadn’t thought about that before. It was probably safer to set up swimming lessons or assessments in the pool after all. Not just because they kids were less likely to be scared of her in human form, but also because it was closer to help should something go wrong. She had found that times had changed since she’d gone to sleep though. It had been a pleasant surprise that most people in Manson didn’t seem scared of her sharp teeth, and she genuinely loved that. She liked not feeling like such a freak among people. “I’d say it was even more relevant in my youth,” she admitted. “I was sleeping a century ago, but back when I first set foot on land… I quickly learned just how valuable my fishing skills were and what I could trade for a basket full of fish,” she said, chuckling slightly. “Speaking of which… Before I turn back into a human, do you want something from the sea? It’s no bother at all to just nip out and grab something,” she said. Hey, normally, she wouldn’t be offering a teacher to fish for them like this without it being arranged before she left the grounds, but considering they were both here anyway, it seemed only polite to offer.
