What she was about to do had been a couple of months in the making.
Dutch had decided she wanted to gift herself to Julius for a few days and that required some planning ahead of time. There were logistics to consider in the form of when he’d have time off work, how she would even get there in a box and getting permission so guards wouldn’t show up to drag her back. She also had to spend Christmas with her niece first. While it wasn’t a big thing for her, Cora was still so young and had grown up with it being a family affair. Seemed only fair to at least give her a little gift and spend the holidays with her. Good thing she liked the girl, because Christmas songs did her head in and she wouldn’t do any of it for anyone else.
In order to find an appropriately sized box, Dutch had had to work with maintenance ahead of time to build one. While she was familiar with how to use a hammer, she hadn’t been allowed to cut any of the wood herself and that had probably been for the best. The box was just big enough to curl up in with her knees to her chest and add in some flowers, but that was all it needed to be. Wasn’t like she’d be spending a lot of time in it.
While she was working on that, she was also doing her best to convince the right people she’d earned a couple of overnight passes. She’d been exceedingly well behaved since Cora arrived and with her niece around she had reason to want to return. She knew how long paperwork around here could take, so she had started working on that in October. Sure, she’d been to Julius’s place before, but she wanted to get to spend time there without him having to play favorites. When that was finally in order, all that was lacking was dates, she had to get her hands on Julius’s schedule for the holidays. Without him knowing she knew when he’d be off work.
Under the guise of wanting to learn better suturing techniques, which was something she was interested in anyway, she spent time in the medical ward and somewhat befriended a nurse that seemed to work closely with the dragon. When she got her alone and asked what it would take to get a look at when Julius was working over the holidays without him knowing she had inquired, she was surprised at how easy it seemed. She just wanted an intern to stop hitting on her.
While her first instinct was to intimidate the man, Dutch knew a non-violent solution was needed. And so she’d approached the leprechaun that had jinxed her and asked what he wanted in exchange for dirt on someone. Turns out, the man that made gold from nothing wanted a precious gem, or a favor of his choosing to be collected when it suited him. While she didn’t have any precious gems herself, at least not around here, agreeing to owing him a favor seemed harmless enough. And so she got what she needed to convince the intern she had enough on him to get him admitted if he didn’t leave the nurse alone. Sure, she didn’t really, but clearly he’d done something bad because he promised to stop right away.
Now that everything was in order, Dutch had gotten help from the Dryad to add flowers that had a pleasant, but strong scent to the box and had carried it to Rob’s car. Once at the car, she had crawled into the box and had given Rob directions to follow since he’d been kind enough to agree to drive and knock on the door. She would reward him with one if the weapons she’d made later.
So while Rob knocked on the dragon’s door, Dutch closed her eyes and focused on slowing down her breathing and heart rate in an attempt to surprise Julius when he opened the box. Once Julius answered the door, he would be told there was a gift for him and that it should be opened indoors. She could only hope he’d appreciate the trouble she’d gone to and be a little surprised at least.
