July Thirteenth, Nineteen Fifty Two
"Caroline, darling, get your pretty head out of the clouds!" the playful voice of a mother called to her daughter. "You have chores to finish, young lady."
As the mother walked away, a sixteen year old girl with beautiful and long copper hair jumped down off of her perch in a tree. With a grin on her face, Caroline laughed and chased after her mother.
"Yes, mama." she acknowledged as she held up the hems of her dress and caught up to the woman.
The teenage girl was never upset by her chores. It was part of life. There were families who had it worse than they did. Caroline was happy to be the daughter of a merchant man. She had a loving family and a cozy home to return to each night.
But that never stopped the girl from dreaming. Every day, around the same time, Caroline would climb up the tall trunk to the sturdy branches of the old oak tree and she would gaze longingly at the Duke's manor.
Oh, what it must be like to live in such lavish luxury. She would day dream until her mother came calling for her. Then she would descend, return home to her chores...and do it all again the next day.
Tying her copper hair in a knot, the girl glanced over her shoulder once more before following her mother again.
Oh, to meet the Duke and his family.
Some wishes are better left unanswered....

July Thirtieth, Nineteen Fifty Two
Apples for the horses...flour for the kitchen...mead for her father...
The petite and fair figure of one Caroline Hale slipped through the crowded market as she continued to recite the list in her mind. As she wandered, she wasn't very conscious of the ones around her. If her mother had accompanied her, she'd have told her to get her head out of the clouds at least fifty times now.
Turning the corner, she gasped slightly as she bumped into another figure. Turning her eyes up to view who she had run into, her face drained of all color as she noticed the wardrobe of the man before her.
She had no idea who this man was...but he was dressed in extravagant cloth. He was obviously a higher class that herself.
Dropping to her knees in subservience, Caroline stuttered slightly.
"I'm so sorry. Please forgive me." she managed to get out.
But much to the girl's surprise, a hand reached down to her, helping her up. The man smiled at her and shook his head.
"Please...the fault is my own. Don't apologize." he explained as his brilliant smile continued to dazzle the female.
But before she could speak in return, a bony hand reached out and grabbed the man by the shoulder, pulling him back.
"You must stop making excuses for common folk, Elijah."
As Caroline rest her eyes on the man, she gasped and bowed.
"Duke Balmomt!" she gasped, stepping back.
The man eyed the girl over a few times and smirked.
"My dear...stand up straight when in our presence." he teased as he watched Caroline stand without question. As he reached for Caroline's hand and placed a kiss to it, the girl shuddered under how cold his skin was.
"I must be off. Please...allow my son to escort you home." he said rather demandingly.
Caroline turned to Elijah and then looked back and the man had already vanished into the crowd. Odd. She thought to herself.
Turning back to the man, she smiled. She didn't know the Duke had a son. Nonetheless, he walked her home and as they chatted, she came to know that the Duke had just adopted the man the prior month.
Elijah's family had apparently died under rather mysterious circumstances and Balmomt had decided the boy would reside with him and be his own heir.
"So...Miss Caroline." he approached, his voice silky and alluring. "When will I see you again?"
As they stood by the gate to the Hale's barn, the copper headed maiden stared in disbelief...unable to find a reply.
With a soft laugh, the man gently touched her face and nodded. "Tomorrow at dawn."
With a nod, Caroline watched the man leave. As she turned on disbelief to enter her home, she could swear she heard the Duke laughing in the distance.
Must have been her imagination....

July Thirty First, Nineteen Fifty Three
"Caroline? Caroline, where are you?"
Eli laughed as he looked all around for his adventurous and troublesome girlfriend. He had planned an entire romantic outing for their one year anniversary and here he was, searching for rambunctious woman.
As he looked about, a soft thud behind him caused him to whip around, coming face to face with Caroline. As they laughed, he pulled her closer to him, running his hand through her copper brown locks.
"Seventeen years old and yet you still act as if the world is your playground." he teased as he kissed her forehead.
"Why can't the world be my playground?" she questioned with a furrowed brow.
As Eli laughed and assured her that the world could indeed be anything she wanted, the female smiled happily. Things had changed drastically for her in the past year. She had gone from gazing longingly at the Duke's manor, to falling head over heels in love with the Duke's adopted son. Eli had made sure that Caroline and her family wanted for nothing. He tended to her every need without question and Balmomt seemed to support every action.
As Eli lead her further into the woods, Caroline looped her arm through his and rested her head on his shoulder.
Once they reached the lake, Caroline smiled as she saw the beautiful picnic that Eli had laid out for them. "Oh Eli...it's beautiful! I love it!" she said with a smile.
Turning to look at the man, she gasped softly as she saw him down on one knee.
"I love you Caroline Hale..." he said as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a dazzling silver and diamond ring. "Will you marry me?"

December Twenty Fourth, Nineteen Fifty Four
Though they never did celebrate the actual holiday of 'Christmas', Duke Balmomt's manor was festively decorated and the soft laughter of friends and loved ones could be heard from the parlor. The room was full of people finally celebrating the engagement of Elijah and Caroline. As the happy couple stood in the middle of a room, Eli raised his glass with a smile as the noise died down.
"I'd like to propose a toast..." he started before placing a kiss on Caroline's fair cheek. "She may have made me chase her for a year...and she may have said 'no' three times...but I finally managed to talk this woman into agreeing to be my wife."
The statement was followed my cheers from the crowd around them and a soft blush tainted the face of the maiden.
As the night went on, the couple was greeted by many. Caroline's parents...their friends...other family members...even a few townspeople were allowed entrance to pay respects to the couple. But as the night went on, Caroline began to notice her betrothed appearing upset. Pulling him aside, she smiled kindly.
"Eli, darling...what's the matter?"
The man smiled softly, placing a single kiss to her lips. She was always so kind and sweet to him.
"Nothing, my love. Just wondering where Balmomt is off to." he said softly. The couple conversed a bit more before Eli was whisked away by some of his bachelor friends wishing to speak with him. With a laugh, Caroline sent him off and paused. Everyone seemed to be mingling about themselves so she took the opportunity to slip away and search for the Duke since it seemed to bother Eli so much.
Wandering about the halls, the heels of Caroline's shoes clicked along the floors. The solitary sound along with the dark shadows of the snow falling along the windows was rather disturbing and Caroline found herself hoping she found Balmomt soon so she could return to the warmth of the parlor.
Room after room she checked, each empty. He wasn't even in his own personal quarters. Finally she made her way down to the kitchens where, at last, she heard movement. Smile gracing her lips, Caroline called out.
"Duke Balmomt? Is that you?"
As she entered the kitchens...a rather disheveled Duke stood before her. Eyed wide, Caroline stepped closer. "Are you okay?" she asked in concern. The man looked to her with rather emotionless eyes and nodded. The entire situation felt off but Caroline kept her mouth shut as she stepped back a moment.
Finally the Duke seemed to regain his composure and fixed himself, smiling at Caroline. She was still uneasy.
"Forgive me...I am old. I often forget where I am." he explained as he looked upon the girl. "Lets...Lets not tell Elijah about this little episode...he worries enough."
Caroline paused briefly. It made sense she supposed. While everything still felt off, she agreed and took his hand as he lead her back to the party.
He was still so cold...

March Second, Nineteen Fifty Five
"You have to leave, Eli....I'm a bloody curse! Everyone...everything I love is dying...please...I can't be responsible for your dying!"
The pale and frail image of a woman who has been driven to madness, cowers in the corner of her quarters. Caroline was absolutely terrified for Eli to be anywhere near him at the moment. She was convinced that anyone who got close to her was doomed to die.
"Caroline, please. Don't be silly...you've been through so much these past couple months. I am to be your husband...please, let me be there for you. he pleaded.
Shaking her head violently and peering at him through her copper locks, Caroline just shakes.
"Eli...if you die...that would just break me..."
Suddenly a rather bone chilling cackle echos through the room and both Eli and Caroline snapped their heads in the direction of the laugh. What they saw was enough to instill fear into anyone.
The Duke stood there...but there was something so peculiar about him now. It was almost as if he radiated power and health. Crossing slowly toward them, he had a sickening grin plastered to his face.
"If only you had said that sooner! I'd have allowed everyone else to live and just taken him!"
The words were so nonchalant that for a split second, Caroline didn't even realize what Balmomt was saying. But when it clicked...oh, it clicked hard. Hot tears streaming down her face, Caroline just stared at him. Duke Balmomt...her future father in law...the law of their land...had killed off everything she cared for?And for what? She didn't even have time to speak before Balmomt was across the room and had Eli by the throat. It had been like he had just appeared there. He was so fast! How?!
"No! No please!" she yelled out. But it was too late. Watching in horror as Eli fell to the ground with a snapped neck, the girl let out a scream that could have likely broken glass. That was it...everyone she loved...gone. She didn't even fight as the Duke neared her and snatched her up. She didn't even budge as she felt him bite into her neck. What did she have to fight for? Let him kill her.
But after having bitten her...he didn't kill her. He held her and glared down at her.
"You are going to be such a powerful vampire, my dear." he whispered.
Vampire? Was he mad? Caroline didn't even have time to dwell on it before he was dragging her off. Down the hall, he shoved her into a white room with only a bed and shut and locked the door behind him as he left. Sinking to the floor, she just wept. She didn't understand any of this.
Ten minutes passed before the door opened again and the girl watched in horror as Balmomt brought the body of Eli into the room. He spent twenty minutes removing the blood from Eli's still fresh veins and placing the blood in separate blood bags. Leaving the drained body in the room, he just smirked and pointed to the cooler he had placed the blood bags in.
"You'll get hungry soon, my pet. And when you do...you will drink Eli's blood."
And with that...he left. Staring in horror at Eli's body, Caroline squeezed her eyes shut...just trying to block it all out.

March Twelfth, Nineteen Fifty Five
Ten days passed and Caroline had undergone such a horrible transformation. The pain and outright agony of the transformation had left her almost mad. And then on top of that, the horror of being left, locked in a room with her dead fiance was close to her breaking point. As of yet, Caroline hadn't drank any of the blood. But she was staring at the cooler with tears streaming down her face. It was getting harder and harder to hold off.
All around her, Caroline was surrounded by broken pieces of wood from where, in a rage, she had destroyed the bed. She crept toward the cooler, careful to avoid the decaying remains of Eli's body, and as she opened the cooler to see the blood, she screamed. Her scream was loud and sharp and could likely pierce the ears of anyone in earshot.
With rage and fury, Caroline picked up two of the bags before throwing them full force at the white walls. They erupted and painted the walls.
Red.
She growled and grabbed the rest of the bags, throwing them one by one at the walls until the white was perfectly splattered with the red of the blood. She shook her head violently and stared at Eli's body. Within moments, she heard the door slam open and she was snatched up by the hair. Turning her head to see Balmomt's angry face glaring back at her.
"You insolent child...how dare you waste precious blood?" he hissed as he drug her toward the wall where she had splattered the blood. "Clean it!"
Caroline planted her hands in the wet blood and then looked at them. She began to laugh. Smearing the blood all over her fair skin, she turned and glared at the Duke.
His face twisted in rage even more and he reared back and slapped Caroline across her face, knocking her down. Then he yelled and began to beat her more...and more...and more...
Until finally everything fell black.
