That was a strange thing to hear. Possibly because the concept of breathing no longer applied to him. Adam didn't argue it though. He partly expected the man to know that he didn't need to take a deep breath, but it wasn't the first time he'd been told that. When his best Jacob Frazier from next door had fallen off the slide during recess, Adam rushed to the teacher and word vomited everything that had happened in thirty seconds flat. The woman had told him to take a deep breath and repeat himself slowly. It was a way to get kids to relax or anyone for that matter. When he thought of it that way, he began to wonder if he wasn't relaxed. Were things floating again? He glanced around. Nopes.
His childish curiosity got the best of him as he found himself leaning in close, eyes wide with a twinge of hope. "Do you think someone can grant my wish and make everything right again? Like the Genie from Aladdin?" He wondered if David could point him to the person that could make all of this possible. "Can you show me to them?" He didn't want to wait another day if things could be normal again. If he could eat his favorite foods, play with Ansley, and hug his mother again. Oh how he'd give anything to hug her again. Maybe they could make him not dead and without any powers so his father wouldn't be so angry with him all the time.
The little boy sat back some. He didn't know how to put his anger away. It just happened. He couldn't really control it. That, in turn, made him seem like a bad person, but Adam didn't think he was bad at all. He just felt as if the world had wronged him. "Aren't you supposed to tell me how I can not get angry," he asked. "My Mom used to make me count all the way to ten," he stated, almost as if ten was the largest number in the world. "But sometimes I had to sit in timeout for six whole minutes."
Adam frowned a bit as David explained that the guards saw him as a threat because he was small and strong. He wasn't frowning because he was angry, but because he didn't understand how anyone could blame him when he didn't know how to control himself sometimes. If people didn't upset them, he wouldn't hurt them. "Well, I don't like it." He crossed his arms over his chest like he'd seen his father do when something didn't sound right. He shook his head. "They're bigger than me, but I'm not afraid of them. It's not fair."
He was a bit disappointed that the man before him was not the Avatar. "So you're just an Air Bender?" It was the only way for him to make sense of it all, by relating it to a show he'd seen a hundred times over. "Okay." Adam stuck his tongue out at the mention of Barney. He didn't like the big purple dinosaur anymore. It was for baby babies and he was far from that.
Adam stormed about in the circle of air that separated him from the guards. He kicked up dust and small pebbles, occasionally picking up the pebbles and throwing them at the wall with as much force as he could muster, which wasn't much unless he was using his telekinesis. The child would glance back at David every now and again, wondering if the man would get angry and call for the guards to assist, but nothing seemed to phase the man. Eventually, the child stopped his temper tantrum and sat against the opposite wall, legs crossed, pouting. "You're dumb," he whined. The fact that he couldn't get a rise out of David had made him revert to name calling, but at least he wasn't throwing things anymore.

He gave a little shrug, almost sad.
"I don't really know. Maybe. I know there are a lot of people with gifts out there nobody understands. But the real question is that, if you could....would you really want to, knowing what you do?" He leaned forward. "If it was me....I'd want to show them who I really am, and can be. That what they did isn't going to break me and I'll make my future better without them. But....I know we are different, and maybe that's not you."
He shook his head.
"No. I'm not supposed to tell you anything, especially about feelings you have that I don't understand. I am not like other counselors...I don't have any desire to treat you like you're broken. You're not. You have every right to feel angry, and hurt. That's normal. I'm just here to be your friend, if you'll let me." He smiled a little, then nodded.
"Yes and no. I am air, so I can bend it. But I can also turn into it, shape it, make it hot or cold....lots of things."
Once he was done with his tantrum, David brushed some of the stuff the boy had tossed about off his shoulders and legs, and stood. He put his hands in his pockets with a sigh, walking over toward the boy again and crouching. "I won't punish you, or hurt you, for lashing out. But at the same time....I won't give you whatever you want just because you're angry. Real friends help each other, and sometimes for you, that help means letting you be angry. I can do that."
He'd stand and gesture with a tilt of his head at the door.
"Our time is almost up, but you can come back tomorrow, if you want to."

There was nothing sadder than watching a child get their hopes up, only for someone to rain on their parade. Adam was no exception. He was expecting David to tell him that he knew someone that could fix this, not the answer the man had given him. For a moment the little boy looked a bit grief stricken. His eyes watered a bit and he looked at the ground, slowly wiping his eyes before the tears could spill. As David continued to speak, Adam stayed looking at the ground. "I miss Mama and Ansley." He missed his mother's hugs and her laugh and he missed Ansley, even if she did like to take his favorite blanket, but he'd be willing to share whenever they watched TV on the couch. And now that he had a baby brother he'd be nice to him too. He'd do whatever they wanted if it meant he could reunited with them again. "But they can't see me, only Ansley," he said after a moment, raising his head just a little. "I don't think I can be good good," Adam said after a moment. "I don't ever feel good good." He shook his head sadly. "I was okay with my old powers, but I don't think I like being like this."
The little boy was so easily distracted by things that he found curious. With David reminding him of an airbender, he found an interest in the topic. "Hot air like a hot air balloon! Mama was going to take me on one, but the people said I was too small. It was wayyyy big," he exclaimed, stretching his arms in a wide arch. "And then cold air is like the air in the freezer when you open it to get a popsicle." Oh he missed the feel of warmth and cold. He missed being able to play in the snow or go swimming on a hot summer day. He'd been robbed of so many joys before he could even consider being tired of them. He said nothing on the shapes due to witnessing as much first hand. The wall that they were trapped inside of was proof enough.
When David got up, Adam frowned just a bit. His expression a bit somber, but he managed to listen nonetheless. He almost told the man that he couldn't punish him because he couldn't touch him, but then he thought about that awful room. He didn't like this 'talking to', but he knew better than to continue to stay angry about it. His mother and father had never allowed him anything he wanted when he acted out. It shouldn't be any different here, although it had been worth a shot.
Adam wasn't sure whether he could believe the man as he spoke of being here to be his friend. For as long as he'd been dead, no one had ever given him the time of day and ask to be his friend. He did take notice of the similarities between the two of them. Neither really had a family anymore and their father's had been unkind to them. These were the things that Adam could understand. Maybe that was why he didn't mind talking to the man. The guy wasn't asking him about his feelings, rather he was getting to know Adam as a person. He appreciated being told he wasn't broken. It made him feel a little closer to the material world. He was silent as he digested all this information. Then he came to a conclusion. "I'm sorry. I want to be friends." He slowly stood up, looked at the door, then glanced at the swings. "Can I play on the swings next time," he asked politely.
"Our time is almost up, but you can come back tomorrow, if you want to."

"That'll never go away, missing them. Even if you find a way back, they won't be the same as when you left. Time changes everyone. But if you really want it, we'll work on finding ways to help you retain a more human form. Can be part of our talks in the future." He would put a hand on the boys shoulder- and whether he felt it truly or not, he'd feel the teltale pressure in his mind, David using his telepathy to make it feel like this hand was there. "That's because people always treat you like you're bad, simply for feeling what any normal person would. Good and bad are up to you, and you don't have to be sorry for feeling things."
He would nod as he stood.
"Just like a hot air balloon. Maybe someday, I'll take you up in one. After all, it's not like you could get hurt from falling anymore." He gave a little smile, nodding at his comparrison of popsicles. So innocent. He nodded as the boy said he was sorry and that he wanted to be friends. "Well, there you go, we're friends then." He would start walking back as the child asked about swings, David tapping his chin a few times as though he was thinking before giving a little shrug. "I can't see why not." He would open the door, holding out a hand to the guards.
"If you don't mind, I'll walk with him back to his room."
The guard simply blinked, and nodded, as David would head inside to lead the boy back to his own cell.
